Rusizi: Man arrested for attempted bribery

Police in Rusizi District, on May 24, arrested a man identified as Emmanuel Ndayisenga after he attempted to bribe a police officer.

Ndayisenga was at the time trying to seduce an officer with Rwf150, 000 in order to illegally release his bales of smuggled clothes that had been seized earlier.

The Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira confirmed the arrest, and said that the attempted bribery happened at the Police station where the seized goods had been impounded.

“The case is now being handled by Rwanda Investigation Bureau in Kamembe,” CIP Gasasira said.

CIP Gasasira thanked the officer for the professional and ethical conduct.

“Corruption is a criminal offense and punishable by the law. It affects not only a country’s development but also service delivery, and thus good governance of any administrative unit,” he said.

The spokesperson called upon the general public to refrain from the criminal acts adding that “when you commit a crime you will face the law.”

He called for more cooperation among residents, to share information on those suspected to be involved in smuggling or graft tendencies to ensure such people are arrested.

Article 640 of the Rwanda penal code, stipulates that, any person who explicitly or implicitly offers, directly or indirectly proposes or promises a gift or any other illegal benefit, to a person in charge of a service, mission or mandate in order to render a service to him/her or somebody else, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five of years and a fine of two to ten times the value of the illegal benefit granted.
