Rusizi: Irondo police roots for more vigilance

The District Police Commander (DPC) for Rusizi District has urged members of the community security night guards-irondo to gradually improve their services to the community by increasing vigilance on any real and potential security threats in their areas of operations.

Superintendent of police (Supt) Athanase Ruganintwari made the appeal yesterday at Rusizi stadium while meeting all Irondo-guards operating in the sectors of Mururu, Kamembe, and Gihundwe during a regular security review meeting to assess the security situation and make plans to close them.

The meeting was held on January 30 and attended by District sister security agencies and sector executive secretaries.

During such meetings, Police seeks to professionalize the community night patrol teams known as “Irondo” through its community policing component.

He noted that Periodic training offered to patrol groups have increasingly instilled discipline, a sense of hard work and accountability in them and has contributed to the success of community policing.

He, however, noted that more is needed to be done in order to close any pending loop holes that may be exploited by criminals and cause havoc to the community.

He asked them to carefully plan their operations because “planning is a center piece for any successful operation”, he noted.

He said though the District is witnessing sustained security, prevailing cases of drug abuse, domestic and gender based violence, a child abuse and corruption are some of the issues that could jeopardize efforts to improve people’s social welfare.
