Commercial motorcyclists in Rusizi District were on November 15, reminded to respect traffic rules and regulations to save their rules but also ensure the safety of other road users.
While speaking to about 160 motorcyclists in Kamembe Sector, the District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Athanase Ruganintwari told them that their reckless use of road continue to cause accidents and loss of lives.
Motorcyclists and their passengers, cyclists and pedestrians are the majority victims of road accidents.
“Majority of the accidents are preventable, all it requires is to make it your individual responsibility; avoid overspending, dangerous maneuvres, riding while drunk or under the influence of drugs," SSP Ruganintwari said.
At least 437 fatalities were recorded between January and September this year. 662 injuries were also registered in the same period.
Overtaking in dangerous places, driving while on phone, overspending and driving while drunk were identified as major causes of accidents.
He also cautioned those who ride without driver's license or using forged one, which is a serious road traffic offense and criminal, respectively.
"Road traffic rules and regulations are there to ensure that everyone use the road in the best way that guarantees their safety and the safety of others," the DPC said.
SSP Ruganintwari also warned them against facilitating criminality like smuggling and drug trafficking.
He instead urged them to work with the Police by reporting drug dealers, smugglers and thieves so as to be arrested.
