Commercial cyclists operating in Kamembe town in Rusizi District were on Monday, sensitized on road safety and urged to abide by traffic rules and regulations to safeguard their lives and those of their passengers.
The District Police Commander (DPC) for Rusizi, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Edward Kizza, while speaking to the cyclists, reminded them to respect traffic control signposts to be safe.
“Most of the fatal accidents that happen in this town [Kamembe] are caused by bad actions, behaviors and recklessness of some cyclists, who violate traffic rules. You carry big luggage which prevents you from observing what is coming from behind; you are known of speeding and careless maneuvers, all these inappropriate behaviors have cost the lives of your colleagues and other people,” SSP Kizza told the cyclists.
“You wake up in the morning going to work to earn a living, give basic necessities to your dependents, but not to die or risk lives of others and this is why road safety is key for every road user” SSP Kizza said.
He also urged them to play their role in crime prevention especially drug related crimes.
“Some of you abuse or sell narcotics; others facilitate dealers to transport their narcotics, all these are criminal acts with severe consequences, including a life sentence. We encourage you to be responsible people, desist from such criminal acts and report those involved,” the DPC urged the cyclists.
Executive Secretary for Kamembe Sector, Vincent de Paul Nsengiyumva advised the cyclist to have a uniform dressing code, wear reflector jacket so as to be visible.
