Residents of Rusiga Sector in Rulindo District have recommitted to reinforce community policing measures against lawlessness.
The commitment was made during the community security meeting held on October 1, in Karenge Cell. The meeting was also attended by the District Police Commander (DPC) Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Laurent Rafiki and the executive secretary of Rusiga Sector, Telesphore Uwamahoro.
CIP Rafiki thanked the residents for their responsiveness in fighting and preventing crimes.
He singled out the issue of young men who climb trucks especially in wee hours to steal goods.
“It is a criminal and deadly act to climb a moving vehicle. These people leave in your midst and at times break into houses at night,” the DPC said, calling for information sharing on these groups.
CIP Rafiki also called for partnership and information on drug dealers. “Drug dealers include those trafficking and distributing cannabis, kanyanga and other contrabands. We also have other people that distill illicit brew given different names.”
He also hinted on people consuming these substances, which is also criminal.
Under article 263 of the penal code, any person convicted of eating, drinking, injecting himself/herself, inhaling or for anointing oneself with psychotropic substances, faces a jail term of between one and two years, or subject to a penalty of community service.
On her part, Uwamahoro asked the residents to be actively involved in community security and development activities, citing Umuganda, Irondo (community night patrols) Umugoroba w’ababyeyi and Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes.
