Rulindo: Man arrested for impersonating EUCL employees

Police in Rulindo District have arrested a 23-year-old man for impersonating an employee of the Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL) a Subsidiary of the Rwanda Energy Group, police have confirmed.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Northern region police spokesperson said the suspect was allegedly soliciting money from unwitting members of the Public to offer EUCL services.

He identified the suspect as Freedom Ndahayo 23 who was arrested on January 28 in Nyabyongo village.

He said authorities received information that, the suspect possessed and installed electricity connecting wires to homes and offering cash power and began a search.

He was caught in possession with Rwf 225,000 which was believed to have been collected from residents of Shyorongi sector, Rutonde cell, according to eyewitnesses and his victims.

“He was also caught red-handed with possession of equipment only reserved for EUCL and forged identifications,” said CIP Rugigana.

CIP Rugigana explained that it was not clear how the suspect acquired these materials and equipment only reserved for the energy group, but investigations by Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) are yet to establish the facts.

Upon conviction, he is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five (5) years but not more than seven (7) years and a fine of not less than three million Rwandan francs (FRW 3,000,000) and not more than five million Rwandan francs (FRW 5,000,000) or only one of these penalties, according to section 3, article 276 of  Law determining offences and penalties in general, Nº68/2018 of 30/08/2018.
