Commercial motorcyclists operating in Rulindo District have been urged to always abide by road traffic rules to prevent road carnage caused by “irresponsible riders.”
The call was made recently by the District Police Commander, Supt. Aphrodis Gashumba while addressing hundreds of motorcyclist organized in their umbrella cooperatives; COCOTABA, COTAMMU and COMOCYA.
The meeting was called to lay strategies to deal with potential security challenges faced and caused by motorcyclists including accidents, trafficking illicit drugs or transporting drug dealers, among others.
Motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians constitute 71 percent of those involved or causing road accidents, according to the Traffic and Road Safety Department.
The DPC noted that motorcyclists are valuable players both in community policing and the development of the country.
Supt Gashumba said that the lives of passengers are always in their hands and that “respecting road safety standards means saving a life.”
He outlined wearing helmets, reflector jackets, having a driver’s license, insuring the motorcycle as well as road safety signposts as one of the life saving standards they should respect.
The DPC further urged them to report anyone they suspect to be involved in criminal activities or try to use them to commit a crime.
