Rulindo: 300 cartons of trafficked illicit gin seized

Police in Rulindo District have arrested three people, who were at the time found trafficking about 300 cartons of a banned illicit gin called Kick Waragi.

The gin was concealed in 10 sacks, police said.

Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, the police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the drugs were intercepted in Base Sector at a roadblock, enroute to Kigali.

He identified the suspects as Agnes Uwizeyimana, 37, Emmanuel Hakorimana, 36, and Jean Dieu Ngoga, 22, who are currently detained at Rulindo police stations pending further legal proceedings.

“We had information about three people, who had hired a vehicle in Burera and transporting illicit gin to Kigali. The vehicle was intercepted along the route, seized the illegal merchandise and arrested all the three owners,” said IP Gasasira.

Burera and Gicumbi are considered one of the main transit routes for banned illicit gins.

Thus, under the community policing approach, residents have since established clubs specifically aimed at supporting the police efforts to reverse the trend.

Elsewhere, a police operation in Nyamagabe District also led to the arrest of one Alphonsine Bamurange, 45, after she was found in possession of about 20kgs of cannabis.

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) policing activities in fighting illicit drugs, are currently geared towards breaking chains of supply following the mapping out of major areas and routes uses.
