Ruhango: public warned over illegal mining

The Ruhango District Police Commander (DPC), Chief Inspector of Police, Thomas Twahirwa, has sternly warned residents in the district against illegal mining.

The warning comes following a recent case in Ruhango District, Mwendo sector where a man died after a cliff of the close site where he was mining illegally curved in.

He noted that “illegal mining is not only a criminal act but leads to loss of lives, which he said RNP cannot afford to keep looking on while lives are being lost.”

The Ruhango District Police Commander, urged residents to always tip security organs on those involved in the criminal act.

Felicien Habimana, the Executive Secretary of Mwendo sector advised residents to shun engaging in illegal mining and switch to business ventures.

Habimana also appealed to owners of mining sites to ensure safety of their employee by mainly registering them in life insurance companies as well as providing them with safety mining tools.

The Mwendo Executive secretary urged residents to strengthen partnership with security organs to ensure that such incidents are prevented.

Illegal mining is punishable under article 438 of the penal code, which attracts a jail term of one year in prison and a fine of Rwf10 million, if convicted.
