Police is Ruhango District, on May 30, apprehended the accountant of postal service branch in connection with embezzlement and misappropriation of funds.
The Police spokesperson for the Southern region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi said that the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday.
“The arrest follows an audit, which indicted that over Rwf3.5 million was not accounted for; either embezzled or misappropriated,” CIP Kayigi said.
“He was responsibility for overseeing various aspects of the postal office financial affairs, including delivering and paying the branch bills, and to keep the books of account balanced,” he explained, adding that the “audit holds him accountable.”
It is alleged that the accountant was channeling part of the money to his bank accounts and tried to forge financial accounts and manipulating the accounting system.
“Investigations by Rwanda Investigations Bureau will inform us if there are other people involved to be arrested,” the spokesperson said.
Article 325 of the Rwandan penal code states that any employees, who embezzles public or private property, funds, negotiable instruments, documents, or movable property which are entrusted to him or her, by virtue of his or her office shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of seven to ten years and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled or destroyed property
