Ruhango: Police tutors youth on child rights, calls for action against abusers

Police in Ruhango District have urged the youth not to keep silence but to report abuses they witness or face.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Angelique Abijuru, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Ruhango, while speaking to about 250 youth in Ruhango Sector, said that one of the challenges affecting the young generation is abuse of their rights and not opening up to report abusers.

"By opening up, you get assisted through counseling for those that suffer psychological torture,  you are given medical attention and also get justice, and all these are given for free," CIP Abijuru told the youth.

All these free medical, legal and psychological services are offered by Isange One Stop Centre.

The DCLO emphasized the need for community working together in glooming children on their rights and life skills and to protect and promote their rights.

In some cases, she observed, these rights are violated by parents or guardians through severe punishments, child labour, not taking them to school and abandoning them, which she urged the young people to always report.

By protecting the rights of children and enrolling in school,  she said, the nation stands a better chance of having productive citizens vested with responsibility upon knowing fundamental pillars of rights.

She urged them to always call the police on 116 - child help line, 3029 for Isange, and 112 for emergency or report to the nearest police station or authorities whenever they face or witness any sort of abuse.
