Police in Ruhango District are holding a 25-year old man on suspicion of having forged the Rwandan currency, which he was found with at the time.
Innocent Maniriho was taken into custody on January 30 after he was found with local counterfeit currency amounting to Rwf24, 000.
“Maniriho was intercepted by residents in Kivumu Village of Rwoga Cell in Ruhango Sector after they saw him with pellets of cannabis, but when they searched him they found 12 counterfeits on him in the denominations of Rwf2000, and they called the Police which took up the case,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern Province, said.
The suspect is currently detained at Ruhango Police station pending further investigations.
“Preliminary investigations have established that there is another person connected to this counterfeit case, and police is searching for him,” Kayigi said.
“He is facing charges related to selling narcotic drugs and counterfeit money,” he explained, thanking the vigilance of the residents in community policing.
Article 604 of the Rwandan Penal Code stipulates that, any person, who counterfeits uses or circulates, by any means, items misrepresented as money or negotiable instruments shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five years and a fine between two to ten times the values of the counterfeit money.
Similarly, article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
