Police in Ruhango District, on Thursday, detained a man after he attempted to bribe police officers.
Nzabambarirwa Herman, 32, was at the time of his arrest in Nyamagana Sector, trying to seduce a police officer with Rwf50, 000 so as to release his motorcycle.
The motorcycle RB 973F was impounded last month to Ntongwe Police station after it was involved in a fatal accident.
“The motorcycle RB 973F was involved in a fatal accident last month and the passenger succumbed to injuries later. However, the rider immediately fled the scene of accident to avoid arrest since he even didn’t have a driver’s permit and other traffic related documents,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said.
The motorcycle was impounded as part of investigations.
“However, we received information that the rightful owner of this motorcycle—Nzabambarirwa—has been going behind talking to different people and trying to seduce them with bribes to help him secure his motorcycle illegally, until April 5, when he reached out to the in-charge traffic with Rwf50, 000 to help him. He was immediately arrested,” CIP Kayigi added.
The suspect is currently detained at Ruhango Police station.
The spokesperson warned people who give their motorcycles to riders without the required documents.
“Investigations are underway to arrest the rider; as for Nzabambarirwa, he will be charged under article 641 of the Rwandan penal code.”
The article provides a sentence of between five and seven years or a fine of twice to 10 times the value of what they had offered in bribes or both, to any person who directly or indirectly offers a gift in order to get an illegal service.
