Ruhango: illicit drugs seized, four arrested

Four people have been arrested in Ruhango district in connection with making and selling illicit liquor and cannabis.

Emmanuel Mbarubukeye, 35, Josiane Uwimana, 48, Claude Hakizimana, 23 and Venuste Nsekanabo,  48 were apprehended on November 7 in Nyamagana and Munini cells of Ruhango sector.

At the time of their arrest, the were found in possession of 2174 pellets of marijuana and 620 litres of Ibikwangari, a locally made illicit brew distilled out of mixed sugarcane residues and water among other ingredients.

Uwimana is also facing attempted bribery charges, after she tried to give  Rwf135, 000 to a Police officer to set her free.

The District Police Commander, Chief Inspector   Thomas Twahirwa, observed that the youth are the most victims and most involved in drug related crimes in the district.

"Operations against crimes and drug abuse in particular is a continuous process, in partnership with local leaders and residents," CIP Twahirwa said.

"We must say this campaign which also includes awareness, is producing results because there is enormous response from the public who provide us with credible information that leads to arrests and seizure of these narcotics," he added.
