Police in the southern province have arrested a security guard who allegedly stole Rwf 300.000 and other valuable personal belongings for one Gottfried Woelft 39, a missionary worker in Diocese Ruhengeri from Austria.
The suspect was identified by police as Ancille Uwingeneye 25 a guard at Duterimbere Microfinance premises located in Ruhango District, Ruhango sect, Nyamagana cell.
The guard is said to have stolen the money on January 1 and the victim immediately filed a complaint to police in Ruhango.
According to the southern region, police spokesperson Chief inspector of police Bonaventure Karekezi, the suspect was identified by residents with whom she had shared part of the money.
He explained that allegedly she snatched the wallet from the customer’s bag while he was making bank transactions.
“When the suspect was first questioned she denied but later confessed to having taken the wallet but she said it held only Rwf 27.500 and vehemently denied to having any more belonging,” said CIP Karekezi.
He said, further findings revealed that she indeed had stolen the total amount of the missing money claimed by the victim, and an ATM card, international certificate of vaccination plus other personal belongings.
“The items were soon after recovered from a nearby toilet where she had dumped them, ”CIP Karekezi said
Police have also recovered the Rwf 226.500 which the suspect had already sent to her mother in Ngoma District.
CIP Karekezi thanked members of the public who freely shared information which led to the arrest and recovery of the items.
The suspect will be charged under section two, article 166 which states that “any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than one million Rwandan francs (FRW 1,000,000) and not more than two million Rwandan francs (FRW 2,000,000), community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.
