Rubavu: Youth tutored on crime prevention

Police in Rubavu District have appealed to the youth in the district to play an active role in the prevention of crime and promotion of peace and safety in their communities.

The appeal was made by Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Solange Nyiraneza, the District Community Liaisons Officer (DCLO), during a meeting with about 130 members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing Rubavu, on April 13.

She noted that acts of lawlessness involve majority the young people.

"Crime prevention starts with sensitising the people, especially the youth; that way we will be educating them on dangers of abusing illicit drugs and prevent other crimes associated such as theft, assault and domestic conflicts," the DCLO said.

CIP Nyiraneza urged youths to report any incident occurring in their communities to allow investigations and prosecution of offenders.

Youths were also asked to remain vigilant and sustain the current momentum of the campaign against narcotic drugs and trafficking.

Community policing brings the public in solving localized problems and to make specific improvements that enhance the overall quality of live in the community.

The approach also gives authority to the community to feel involved and have a sense of belonging and responsibility in fighting and preventing crime.

Edison Nshizirungu, the youth leader in Nyundo Cell thanked police for the continued community engagement and reiterated the need for peace and security to foster youth development.

He urged youngsters to join economic development cooperatives and benefits from government development opportunities through loans and other schemes.
