Rubavu: Woman arrested over drug trafficking

Police in Rubavu have arrested a 38-year-old woman for alleged trafficking and trade in illicit drugs.

Eugenie Nyirasafari is currently held at Gisenyi police station following her arrest on Wednesday. 

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Western region Police spokesperson confirmed the arrest.

He said Nyirasafiri was taken into custody after she was found with quantities of cannabis.

"Residents, who knew her criminal dealings called the Police anf officers found Nyirasafiri with rolls of cannabis. She is known to be one of the traffickers of cannabis from the Democratic Republic of Congo," CIP Gasasira explained. 

Gasasira also explained that "collaboration with citizens have led to the arrest of many drug dealers."

Her husband identified as Innocent Bamporiki was sentenced to four years imprisonment for the same crime.

Under article 263 of the new penal code, anyone convicted of producing, transforming, transporting, storing, giving to another or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances faces a penalty of between seven years and life imprisonment, including fines of up to Rwf30 million.
