Two people were arrested last week in Rubavu District sneaking various goods including bales of second-hand clothes locally known as caguwa, into the country.
The suspects were intercepted in Murambi Village of Buhaza Cell in Rubavu sector with five bales of used clothes, five bales of shoes and powdered milk (NIDO).
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Eulade Gakwaya, the Western Province Spokesperson said the impounded goods have since been handed over to the Revenue Protection Unit in Rubavu, which has since taken up the case.
He thanked the residents especially those residing along the border lines, for continued partnership against criminality and illegal businesses.
“We have arrested a number of smugglers in the recent past including those attempting to smuggle secondhand clothes, and almost all these successful operations are based on credible information we receive from the public,” CIP Gakwaya said.
He warned smugglers that operations in partnership with the public will continue against such illegal businesses.
Article 369 of the Penal Code states that a taxpayer guilty of tax evasion shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of between three to six months and a fine equal to the evaded tax.
