A 35-year-old man identified as Jumapiri Ntiriburakaryo, 35, was arrested on January 31 in Nyundo Sector, Rubavu District with a stolen motorcycle.
The motorcycle was reportedly stolen in October from the owner only identified as Tuyisenge in Gisenyi Sector.
Chief inspector of Police (CIP) Eulade Gakwaya, the Police spokesperson for the Western region said motorcycle was recovered from the suspect in Pfunda village.
“During the initial investigations last year, three people who masterminded the theft were arrested and prosecuted although the motorcycle was not found, but investigations continued until it was recovered on January 31,” CIP Gakwaya said.
“There is a connection between Ntiriburakaryo and those arrested last year. Investigations have actually established that he got the motorcycle from them,” CIP Gakwaya said.
Theft is punishable under article 300 of the penal code, with a sentence of up to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
The spokesperson also called for real time information sharing to facilitate police timely response to recovered stolen or missing items, and arrest of suspects.
