Security organs in Rubavu District foiled a ring, which attempted to traffic sacks of cannabis into the country through an illegal border post.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said that two drug traffickers tried to sneak two sacks of cannabis into the country through Humure village, Hehu cell in Bugeshi sector, which lies on the borderline with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“Security organs, while on patrol in the area on Sunday night, saw two men carrying luggage, when they ordered them to stop they dropped the sacks and run back to DRC. On checking, security personnel established that the sacks were loaded with cannabis,” CIP Kayigi said.
“The strengthened operations are meant to foil and break such drug trafficking rings, and to bring them to justice,” he added, calling for continued information sharing on drug dealers.
“Majority of the drug traffickers are arrested due to information we get from the people, and most of them are caught red-handed with quantities of narcotics. Even if you suspect someone to be a drug dealer, just inform the Police or local authorities to verify,” CIP Kayigi emphasized.
