Police in Rubavu District have urged youth in the area to desist from drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption.
Police also advise local leaders and parents to remain vigilant in guiding youngsters and report drug traffickers in their communities.
The call was made by the District Community Liaison Officer Chief Inspector of police (CIP) Solange Nyiraneza during a meeting with residents of Busasamana, Bugeshi, Mudende and Cyanzarwe sectors on April 19.
The meeting was part of the regular community outreach program conducted by police to sensitize the public against lawlessness and inculcates the community policing methodology.
The methodology brings the public in solving localized problems and to make specific improvements that enhance the overall quality of life and security in the communities.
The approach also gives authority to the community to feel involved and to have a sense of belonging and responsibility in fighting and preventing crimes.
CIP Nyiraneza warned that authorities will arrest any person who engages in crime.
“We have reports that some people are involved in trafficking cannabis from the neighbouring country; we have arrested some and will continue to do so…in order to enforce the law” she explained.
CIP Nyiraneza also drew attention on exiting challenges of teenage unwanted pregnancies saying that it is a serious social issue that has to be tackled by all residents.
“Teen pregnancy is a serious issue and a violation of child rights; Marriage is only allowed at the age of 21 and above. Early marriages and pregnancies contributes to health risks both to the underage mother and the baby... it's a social issue that you should stand up against and report it,” CIP Nyiraneza explained.
Busasamana sector executive secretary Epimaque, Bizimana who was also present at the meeting reiterated the need for collective action in sensitizing the youth to shun illicit conduct especially drug abuse.
He said youth should be taught life skills and how to break free from habits that kept them hooked to drugs. They also need to learn how to focus on building a solid future.
“Many youth in the country are often introduced to drugs through their peers. Young people also easily drift into drugs, alcoholism” he said
