Rubavu: Drug trafficker arrested with 900 pellets of cannabis

A drug dealer has been arrested in Rubavu town, Rubavu District with over 900 rolls of cannabis. 

Muhire Honore had just crossed to Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), through a porous border.

He was arrested in his village of Basizi in Rukoko Cell of Rubavu Sector, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.

Muhire said that he crossed to DRC with two other men, to buy and traffic cannabis into Rwanda. 

Two of his accomplices stayed back in DRC, he added.

CIP Karekezi said: "In the evening of April 26, police and members of other security organs, while on patrol in Basizi Village, stopped Muhire, who had just crossed into Rwanda from DRC. They found over 900 pellets of cannabis concealed in the bag he carried, and he was immediately taken into custody for drug trafficking."

He warned of "increased operations against drug trafficking and sell as well as illegal cross-border, which can also be disastrous by spreading the Coronavirus,"

The spokesperson urged communities residing on the borderline to report people, who cross illegally into our out of the country, including drug dealers who can easily spread the pandemic in their localities. 

Drug trafficking or trade is a crime punishable with up to life in prison, under article 263 of the penal code.
