RUBAVU: Drug dealer arrested

A man, said to have been one of the major traffickers and distributor on Rubavu District was arrested by the Police on Wednesday, July 1.

Didier Uwamahoro, 27, was caught in Rubavu Sector, Umuganda Cell with 380 rolls of cannabis.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said Police had information that Uwamahoro is part of the ring that traffics cannabis into the country from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“After receiving this information, Police organized an operation and he was arrested red-handed with 380 pellets of cannabis, which he was at the time delivering to another customer,” said CIP Karekezi.

Uwamahoro is said to be one of the wholesalers of cannabis in Rubavu. It is said that he uses children rearing cattle in no man’s land to prevent being detected.

The spokesperson warned against such criminal activities, worse still using children.

Anyone convicted as a major dealer or supply in "severe drugs" under article 263 of the law determining offences and penalties in Rwanda, faces between 20 years and life in prison, and a fine of up to Rwf30 million.

If the crime of “severe drugs” is performed to a child or at the international level, the penalty is a life imprisonment and a fine of not more than Rwf30 million and not more than Rwf50 million.
