Police in Rubavu District, on February 2, held a meeting with about 200 members of community night patrols of Gisenyi Sector, and urged them to aim for professional security services.
The District Police Commander of Rubavu, Supt. Eric Kabera, who chaired the meeting embarked on the importance of the community night patrols commonly known as Irondo as a force multiplier, but added that it goes with commitment and discipline.
Present was also the executive secretary for Gisenyi Sector, Vedaste Uwimana.
The DPC reminded them to be eyes and ears of their communities against lawlessness.
"The trust people have in you should be depicted in your actions; be vigilant and work with them to identity and report wrongdoers like drug dealers and thieves," Supt. Kabera said.
Rubavu is mapped as one of the major transit routes for drug traffickers.
Supt. Kabera also urged them to be defined by discipline, teamwork, to love what they do, not to indulge in soliciting bribes and drunkenness.
The Irondo personnel thanked Rwanda National Police (RNP) for its continued support through training and pledged to strengthen their night patrols.
Uwimana, on his part, also thanked the Irondo personnel and residents of Gisenyi for working together to fight crimes.
He called for strengthened information sharing on drug dealers and families facing internal conflicts.
Uwimana further urged them to take part in social and economic community development activities including saving and subscribing to public health insurance--mituelle de sante.
