Commercial motorcyclists operating in Rubavu District have been reminded to always abide by traffic rules and regulations to prevent fatal accidents.
The call comes after police in Rubavu intercepted five motorcycles that were operating without passengers’ helmets as well as driver’s license and motorcycle insurance.
According to the Western Region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the defiant motorcyclists who operate outside the set road safety guidelines are among those that facilitate criminality.
The motorcycles were impounded to Gisenyi Police station.
In his advice to motorcyclists, the spokesperson said: “Motorcyclists know better that wearing a reflector jacket and helmet is compulsory. The helmet is meant to protect both the rider and the passenger’s head, which is the most fragile part, in case of an accident. We enforce these safety standards to protect lives.”
CIP Kanamugire recognized those that adhere to the professional code of conduct and to traffic rules, and added that, “With the support of motorcyclists, we should work harder to ensure that all those who conduct this business understand their role in promoting good virtues and road safety.”
He reminded that helmets help in protecting those on motorcycles from a possible concussion in case of an accident and that that’s why it’s mandatory to have it.
