On Thursday, five road traffic accidents were recorded across the country in which one person died and score others injured.
According to statistics from the department of Traffic and Road Safety, at least four accidents are registered daily in which one person dies.
Road accidents are third leading cause of death after malaria and HIV/AIDS worldwide.
Whereas the first two are virus that requires attention of medical experts, accidents are caused by, among others, carelessness, over speeding and vehicle mechanical faults.
Preventing them requires only ‘mindset’ and staying on course when driving while observing traffic rules.
The Rwanda National Police, through its traffic and road safety department, in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure, have conducted various road security awareness programmes – road traffic week – erected signposts at hotspots, established Zebra Crossings.
Despite all this, our brothers, sisters, relatives and friends still lose their lives to the hands of careless road users.
Road users, especially drivers, motorcycle taxi operators need to revise their conduct while on road, respect traffic lights, Zebra Crossing, avoid over speeding, take their automobiles for mechanical inspection, avoid driving while drunk, ban maneuvers.
By doing this, you will be saving lives including yours and protecting public infrastructure.
Pedestrians should also look at either side of the road before crossing and use Zebra Crossings.
Road traffic accidents can be preventable if we road users respect all traffic regulations.
