Road safety awareness continues in Ngororero and Rubavu

Drivers and tax-moto operators in Ngororero and Rubavu districts were on November 17 reminded of their obligation to reinforce road safety by observing road traffic rules and regulations to prevent likely fatal accidents that mostly involve and caused by vehicles and motorcycles.

While speaking to vehicle owners and drivers in Ngororero, the District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marc Minani observed that some drivers are fond of not relying on roadside safety signposts and overtake in sharp corners and use phones while driving, which leads to deadly accidents and loss of lives.

The meeting held in Ngororero Tax Park was also attended by passengers and heads of travel agencies in the district.

CIP Minani challenged drivers to report their colleagues who tarnish their profession to be penalized and prevent accidents they would otherwise cause.

He reminded them to install speed governors in their vehicles.

In a recent meeting that brought together the ministries if Internal Security, Infrastructure, Rwanda National Police (RNP), Rwanda Utility and Regulatory Agency (RURA) and transport companies, it was agreed that all public transporters install speed governors before the end of this month.

During the meeting, the Minister of State for Transport, Alexis Nzahabwanimana disclosed that

They will also “embark on banning driver that have a bad track record of accidents and withdraw their driving licenses.”

“When an accident occurs, it doesn’t distinguish and in most cases even drivers die. So, when you are holding a steering it’s your life you are holding, that of the passengers you are carrying and the future of your dependants,” CIP Minani told transporters.

In Rubavu, IP Janvier Nsana, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) met with heads and members of the 17 commercial motorcycle cooperatives and urged them to be agents of community safety while abiding traffic rules.

Talking about the role some motorcyclists play in aiding criminality, IP Nsana urged them to adopt internal initiatives to report and penalize such defiant individuals who aid criminality.

In the recent past, a number of commercial motorcyclists have been arrested in different parts of the country transporting smuggled goods or illicit drugs.
