Rwezamenyo Sector wins 7th edition of ‘Security and Hygiene’ campaign

Rwezamenyo Sector of Nyarugenge District emerged the overall best performer in the just concluded 7th edition of the ‘Security and Hygiene’ campaign in the City of Kigali, trouncing other 34 sectors of Nyarugenge, Gasabo and Kicukiro districts.

The event to award the best performers was held on Friday, bringing the six-month campaign conducted jointly by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigaliu, to an end.

The event also marked the commencement of the 8th edition that aims at making Kigali clean, green and safe.

Rwezamenyo received a trophy and a vehicle – double cabin Mahindra. Remera sector of Gasabo district which came second received a certificate of merit and a cash prize of Rwf1 million while Kagarama sector of Kicukiro that came third pocketing Rwf800, 000 and a certificate. Kinyinya Sector conquered the fourth slot with a certificate and Rwf 700, 000 while Kimisagara completed the top-five list with a cash prize of Rwf500, 000. READ MORE

UN decorates Rwandan Police advisers in CAR

The United Nations decorated 36 Rwandan police officers operating under its mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). The officers awarded the UN medal of service excellence work as ‘Individual Police Officers’ and work as mentors and advisers.

The medal parade held in the base camp of the Rwandan Protection and Support Unit (PSU) in the capital Bangui was presided over by the Deputy Representative of the UN-Secretary General in MUNUSCA, Kenneth Gruck.

Present was also the Colonel Philipe Garcia, who is in charge of Police operations and General Major Mohammed Selloum, who represented the Force Commander.

Gruck thanked the Rwandan police peacekeepers for their exemplary service, citing discipline and commitment as the driving force behind their professional performance. READ MORE

We won't let GBV stand in our way of dev’t, says Min Kaboneka

The Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka presided over the official launched a week-long campaign against Gender Based Violence and Child abuse, and called for mass action against the scourge.

The minister, who was addressing about 1000 local leaders in Bugesera District, said that GBV and child abuse effects socio-economic development, and called for proactive and collective measures between all to address the challenges.

The campaign runs under the umbrella of Police Week launched a fortnight ago.

“We can't achieve development, public safety and health amidst family conflicts, and neither should our quest for sustainable development be hindered by GBV; this is why we must eliminate this scourge. We have the means and abilities to reverse the trends,” the Minister said. 

The week-long campaign was within the family month and drew partners from the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, Gender Monitoring Office and National Women’s Council, among others.

The event was also part of series of campaigns held in line with Police Week 2018 that runs under the theme; ‘18 Years of Partnership in Policing: Towards a Crime-free Village.’ It is part of the RNP 18th anniversary. READ MORE

Handball League: Police ends first round on high note

The first round of the National Handball Championship ended with Police maintaining its season unbeaten run to remain top of the table with 30 maximum points.

Alexis Nshimiyimana, Cpl. Gilbert Mutuyimana and Zacharie Tuyishime scored eight, six and five goals, respectively; to guide the record five times champions to an easy 31-15 win over ES Kigoma on Sunday.

The law enforcers, which is now eight points above the second-placed APR, which has two matches left to play, is looking to revive its glory and to add their sixth national championship trophy in the cabin.

Having won the 2014, 2015 and 2016 championships, Police lost the trophy to APR on the final day of the 2017 league, when the two locked horns.

Police Handball coach, Dismas Turatsinze, who has so far guided his team to win this year’s Heroes Day Cup, believes that his players have all it to see a successful season. READ MORE

Kayonza: 20 arrested over felling of trees in gazetted land

Police in Kayonza District arrested 20 people for allegedly cutting trees in a gazetted land to burn charcoal. The group was rounded off on May 29, in Gahini Sector with at least 22 sacks of charcoal.

Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire said the arrest followed information provided by residents of Gahini about a group of people involved in cutting of trees for charcoal-burning.

“The operation was conducted with detectives from Rwanda Investigations Bureau, and at the time the suspects were trying to smuggle the packed sacks of charcoal from the forest on bicycles; the suspects neither had authorization to cut trees nor to deal in charcoal business,” CIP Kanamugire said. Kayonza: Sacco manager, bailiff arrested over embezzlement

A court bailiff and the manager of Murundi savings and credit cooperative in Kayonza District were arrested last Saturday in connection with either embezzling or mismanagement of about Rwf55.3 million. 

“The arrest followed an audit conducted by the National Bank of Rwanda and Rwanda Cooperative Agency (RCA) between March 5 and May 14, this year which shows that about Rwf55.3 million were not accounted for,” the spokesperson said.

“The court bailiff is alleged to have embezzled a total of Rwf4, 128, 535, according to the report. He had been hired to recover the Sacco monies from bad loans, instead of remitting it he instead swindled it,” CIP Kanamugire said.READ MORE

Dog owners reminded to keep them indoor

Rwanda National Police (RNP) called upon owners of dogs to take appropriate measures to restrain them to prevent them from roaming in communities where they are likely to cause insecurity. 

The call followed an incident on May 31, where stray dogs bit five goats in Rugoma Cell of Nasho Sector in Kirehe District. Reacting to the incident, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Theobald Kanamugire said:

“Despite our continued calls, It's quite unfortunate that there are people who have kept a deaf ear to restrain their pets.” “We call upon owners of dogs to confine and control them,” he added. READ MORE
