Senatorial Standing Committee on Security meet RNP leadership

Members of the Senatorial Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Security, on October 4, visited Rwanda National Police (RNP) where they were received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

Headed by the chairperson of the commission Michael Rugema, the legislators and the Police leadership held discussions related to the implementation of Government Fundamental Principle in the fighting Genocide and all forms of related ideologies. 

IGP Gasana said that genocide is a pertinent issue that the force gives much attention.

He added that RNP has prioritized capacity building as a driving force towards professionalism as an effective tool that has facilitated in fighting and preventing genocide related crimes. Read more

Training on AU peacekeeping standards start in Gishari

A Training of Trainers (ToT) course on African Union peacekeeping and support operations started, yesterday, at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari bringing together 25 police officers from Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

The month-long Formed Police Unit (FPU) ToT course organized by the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), a regional body mandated to enhance peace and security in the Eastern African region.

Speaking at the official opening of the course, the commandant of PTS, Commissioner of Police (CP) Vianney Nshimiyimana, said that Rwanda National Police (RNP) prioritized training, among others, as an efficient tool to address the evolving policing challenges. Read more

Clamping down on human trafficking in Rwanda

Every year, thousands of people majority women and girls, fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. Rwanda is no exception.

The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) labels human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons as a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights.

It is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person for the purposes of exploitation. Marines intercept 330kgs of smuggled minerals

The Police marines unit, Monday, arrested a man who was smuggling about 330 kilogrammes of coltan through Lake Kivu.

Patrick Nyamwaba was arrested at about 8am on Brasserie shores in Rubavu District, Police said.

Police spokesperson for the Western Province, Inspector of Police (IP) Eulde Gakwaya, said the intercepted smuggled minerals have since been handed over to the Revenue Protection Unit (RPU), a Rwanda National Police (RNP) arm attached to Rwanda Revenue Authority to fight fraud and smuggling. RRA staff under investigation over illegal tax exemption

Police investigations into abuse of taxation processes and systems has unearthed how some Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) employees connive with fraudsters in bypassing digital systems to evade taxes.

In an interview with the Commanding Officer (CO) of Revenue Protection Unit (RPU), Senior Supt. Alphonse Businge, investigations into the malpractices came to light as police followed a lead into a suspected corruption case.

“One person came to us claiming that she was being overcharged on vehicle taxes. She had sold off her vehicle that was once a cab, and in the process of transfer of ownership, she contact a broker to process the paperwork,” Senior Supt. Businge.

The broker identified as Andre Ntarundenga agreed to the deal and later returned to the clients and informed her that vehicle had an income tax debt amounting to Rwf320, 000. Read more

Regional Police officers pay tribute to Genocide victims

Twenty-five police officers from Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda currently attending the course on African Union peacekeeping standards at the Police Training School Gishari in Rwamagana District, on October 7, visited Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The officers from Eastern Africa Standby Force member states were also at the memorial as part of their month-long Formed Police Unit (FPU) Training of Trainers course that seeks to transform them into certified trainers on AU peacekeeping and support standards.

At the memorial centre, where they laid wreaths and held a minute of silence in memory of over one million innocent lives killed 24 years ago, they were given the history behind the dark period, the failures of the UN to prevent it, how it was stopped and how the country has moved on in unity, reconciliation, security and development aspects. [PHOTOS]: Light shines in Gatsibo as police connects crime-free village with solar energy

All roads, on Friday , led to Kagarama village of Gitoki sector of Gatsibo District where the Governor of the Eastern Province, Fred Mufuruke presided over the launch of the crime free village.

Kagarama Village, according to police reports, has noted recorded any crime for the last three years, and residents attribute this to their village chief, Patrick Bimenyimana, who made sure that the government security and development programmes are interpreted, understood and well implemented by the people.

As an appreciation for the residents of Kagarama, Rwanda National Police (RNP) connected all the 153 households that constitute the village, with solar energy valued at a tune of over Rwf13 million, as a reward for their outstanding implementation of the community policing concept.

"We have government programmes to implement, and we have good leadership that guides us. All we do is listen, understand and work as a team, and that's how we have been able to make our village safe and focused," said Bimenyimana. Read more
