1148 Police recruits graduate as 'Police Constables'
A total of 1148 recruits in the eleventh intake of the Basic Police Course at Police Training School in Gishari successfully graduated on June 1, as Rwanda National Police (RNP) continues to bolster its force in the face of the emerging security challenges.
The graduation ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana and attended by RNP leadership and government officials.
After successfully completing the seven-months training, Minister Harerimana gave the graduands a rank of 'Police Constables.
“This is just the beginning. Training at police is continuous to equip officers with adequate skills to harmonise safety and to pursue patriotic objectives that propel Rwanda towards its desired future,” Harerimana told the new Police Constables.
Pupils, Students visit RNP to learn on policing
Students and pupils of High Hill Academy in Kicukiro District have vowed to play an active role in an effort to fight and prevent crimes, particularly Gender Based Violence (GBV) and drug abuse.
The students made the commitment on June 4, during their study tour of Rwanda National Police (RNP) Headquarters in Kacyiru, as they visited to learn policing and crime prevention initiatives.
During their tour, the students were received by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Damas Gatare, Commissioner for Community Policing, who presented the various activities that RNP conducts in crime prevention, capacity building among other.
68 Police officers complete training on serial killings investigations
Solving and preventing crimes in time and efficiently helps to promote justice and is very important in cementing trust and strong partnership between Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the public.
The message was delivered on June 5 by Commissioner of Police Cyprien Gatete, Commissioner for Reserve Police in RNP during the closure of a week-long field training exercise conducted by officers in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The exercise involved 68 officers, with 50 of them from CID; others were drawn from logistics, medical forensics and station police commanders from Kigali.
Under the code name: “The Red Bag”, was a simulation exercise for investigators in crime scene management and professional handling of serial killing case files.
Western Province crime preventers get free HIV testing
Police officers operating in the Western Province, together with other counterparts in crime prevention including personnel under District Administrative Security Support Organ (DASSO), received free HIV testing courtesy of Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
The testing exercise began on June 5 by a team of medical personnel from Kacyiru Police Hospital, and will last for ten days.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr Wilson Rubanzana, the coordinator for Isange One Stop centers and Specialised Medical Programme, who spearheaded the exercise, noted that the exercise targets to offer free tests to over 100 individuals, after which counseling and sensitization sessions will be held on HIV/AIDS protection.
Rwamagana residents urged to fight against GBV
Residents of Rwamagana pledged to increase efforts against gender-based-violence and child abuse by collaborating more with Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security agencies and providing timely information.
The call was made on June 4, during a community meeting organized in Nyakariro Sector, Rwamagana District, which attracted RNP officers, other security agencies, local leaders and hundreds of residents to increase dialogue about crime prevention.
During the discussions, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Theos Badege, Commissioner for CID, noted that timely information is very necessary in preventing and solving crimes – and it is through community policing that a mutual relationship built on trust can be built between police and residents.
Duo arrested with 20 crates of smuggled alcohol
Rwanda National Police (RNP) in Bugesera District foiled an attempt to smuggle 20 crates of alcohol and arrested two suspects who were involved in the plot.
Acting on a tip-off from concerned residents, police on June 3 intercepted Germaine Barakagwira and his driver Ramadan Nyandwi in Nyamata Sector, while on their way to Kigali with 20 crates of untaxed beer brands.
The alcohol was seized and the suspects are currently held at Nyamata Police Station as investigations commence.
The Police Spokesperson for Eastern Province, Inspector Emmanuel Kayigi, noted that RNP is at the helm of fighting economic crimes including tax evasion and smuggling, which are detrimental to the economy and sabotage legitimate trade.
Dozen arrested for illegal mining
Police in Gatsibo District arrested twelve people suspected of illegal mining activities, as efforts continue to overcome the vice.
Seven of the suspects, all residents in Remera Cell in Rugarama Sector, were arrested red-handed, on May 30, 2015, while illegally mining in Extra Mining Associated, a mineral site located in Cyabusheshe Cell in Gitoki Sector.
Five others suspects were arrested on same day in Matunguru Cell in Rugarama Sector, after they were found in possession of 313 kilograms of cassiterite and crude mining tools they allegedly used in the illegal activity.
The suspects who include one female are currently detained at Kabarore Police station, pending further Police operations focused on fighting and preventing illegal mining.
More arrested as police continues to break cattle theft ring
Police arrested another group of 16 individuals suspected to be part of a cattle-theft ring, bringing the total of number of those arrested to 53.
The group of 16 was paraded before the press on May 1 in Rwamagana – and they are believed to have concentrated their illegal operations in the districts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Kayonza.
Among those arrested included farm-workers, abattoir and butcher operators, vehicle drivers and middle-men who linked all the involved in the crime.
Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Celestin Twahirwa, revealed that since the beginning of the Police operation to crackdown this ring, 80 cows had been reported missing in those three districts.
