[PHOTOS]: Over 890 complete 'Basic Police Course'

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye, on Friday conferred upon the rank of ‘Police Constable’ to 892 police men and women after completing a nine-month course at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

The 14th Basic Police Course include 160 women.

Present at the pass-out ceremony was also the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, the Governor of the Eastern Province Fred Mufulukye and the Deputy IGP in charge of Administration and Personnel Juvenal Marizamunda, among others.

Minister Busingye said that such training is an indication of the  government commitment and RNP in particular to professionalise the force, take services closer to the people and ensure that public safety and security is guaranteed at all times.

"Rwanda National Police has a mandate and training is one of the best ways to ensure that the law is respected and offenders are brought to justice. Knowledge and skills based policing quatantees professionalism and service excellence," Minister Busingye said.

"You have been trained and today you have formerly taken up your policing duties that requires you to be exemplary, support government development programmes in areas of your respective deployment and be in compliance with the law," the Minister said, urging them to continue to sustain the force's brand of working with the people to improve their social welfare through various human security activities. Students from Nigeria’s ‘Institute for Security Studies’ visit RNP

Twenty students from Nigeria’s Institute for Security Studies currently in Rwanda on a study tour, on July 5, visited Rwanda National Police (RNP) at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

The students headed by the Institute’s Deputy Director of Studies, Dr. A. M Wali Fsi, were received by the RNP leadership.

While addressing the students, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana said that in countering security challenges “people-centred policing became our preferred choice to empower the citizenry to own their security.”

“Through community policing, various groups like anti-crime clubs, community policing committees, youth volunteers in community policing, anti-crime ambassadors composed mainly of local artistes and journalists, Police ambassadors as well as partnership with government and private institutions and faith-based organizations, have played crucial roles in raising awareness against crime, information sharing on planned crime or people behind certain crimes, and have greatly facilitated police operations and in bringing offenders to justice,” IGP Gasana said. [PHOTOS]: UN decorates Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Haiti

The United Nations, on July 3, decorated 140 Rwandan Police officers serving under its peacekeeping mission in Haiti, with service medals.

The medals serve as recognition of their efforts in furthering peace and security in the Caribbean nation.

The decorated officers form the 8th Rwandan Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU8) contingent deployed in Haiti in August last year, where they serve various duties including crowd control, protection of key installations and infrastructures, escort of top UN staff and other related duties, as well as rendering humanitarian assistance, among others.

RWAFPU8 is headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Yahaya Kamunuga. Read More

Police Senior Command students in Sudan as they begin external study tour

Police students from African countries currently attending the 6th intake of the ‘Police Senior Command and Staff Course’ at the National Police College (NPC) in Musanze District, have started a week-long external study tour in Sudan as part of their one year course.

Twenty-eight police students from eight African countries are attending the one year professional and career course, which also offers a Master’s in Peace Studies and Conflict Transformation, and Level 7 certificate in strategic leadership and management.

The senior officers are from Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, the host.

The external tour in Sudan started on July 1, and follows another week-long internal study tour conducted in May where the officers visited various public and private institutions including Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC), among others. 

In Sudan, the students headed by the Commandant of NPC, Commissioner of Police (CP) Felix Namuhoranye, on July 2, visited different policing institutions including the Khartoum State Police, Training Department and the Regional Forensic Laboratories. Read more

[PHOTOS]: Thousands join Rwanda peacekeepers in CAR to celebrate 24th liberation anniversary

More than 5000 people including senior government and UN officials in Central Africa Republic as well as residents in the capital Bangui, yesterday, joined Rwandan Police and military peacekeepers serving in the central African nation to celebrate the 24th Liberation anniversary.

The celebration activities presided over by the Right Hon. Prime Minister of CAR, Simplice Sarandji, were held at the base camp of the Rwandan military peacekeepers-- Rwanbatt5--in M’Poko in Bangui

The occasion was also graced by the Special Representative of UN Secretary General, Pafait Onanga-Ayanga and the Deputy Force commander of the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Central Africa Republic (MINUSCA), Brig Gen Traore Sadiki. 

The Rwandan diaspora in CAR also joined the celebrations. Read More
