Fifty-eight police officers, yesterday, completed the second intake of the ‘Police Tactical Commanders and Police Junior Command and Staff courses at the National Police College (NPC) designed to improve the skills of officers in various policing fields.
At least 29 officers completed the three-month Police Tactical Commanders Course while the same number completed the Junior Command and Staff Course, which lasted for four months.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, who presided over the pass-out, challenged the officers to be defined by professional conduct.
“We have a vision and a mission to attain in an exemplary and professional way,” IGP Gasana said. Read more
Police, partners conduct mass campaign against illicit drugs
The awareness against illicit drugs in the country continued Friday where Police was joined by partners including local authorities and Rwanda Biomedical Centre in the campaign conducted concurrently in at least ten district.
The community sensitization campaign, which also tackled the issue of child pregnancy, was held in the districts of Muhanga, Gisagara, Karongi, Kicukiro, Rwamagana, Nyarugenge, Nyagatare, Nyanza, Huye and Musanze.
It comes at the time when the country and Rwanda National Police (RNP) in particular, has intensified joint efforts to combat the vice said to be still high among the young generation, and influencing other criminal activities like theft, domestic and gender based violence, and causing school dropouts, among others. Kirehe: Mayor Muzungu challenge grassroots leaders on community policing
The Mayor of Kirehe District, Gerald Muzungu challenged grassroots leaders to effectively implement the community policing concept, which he emphasized that it lies in their responsibilities in ensuring the wellbeing of the people.
Muzungu made the remarks on Wednesday in Mahama Sector while addressing grassroots leaders. The meeting was also attended by residents of the nearby cells of Munini and Mwoga.
The Mayor reminded the leaders that community policing acts as a link between them, residents and the people.
“Security is the responsibility of everyone… it is a shared obligation by every Rwandan but as leaders, it lies in your tasks to guide the people in all aspects of development and security,” Muzungu said. Read more
Man arrested with counterfeited money
Police in Nyabihu District arrested a man identified as Emmanuel Mushimiyimana, 23, for allegedly circulating counterfeited currencies.
According Inspector of Police (IP) Eulade Gakwaya, the Western Province Police spokesperson said the suspect was arrested in Mukamira trading centre in Rugeshi Cell of Mukamira Sector with Rwf34000, all fake.
“He was reported by a mobile banking agent, whom he tried to defraud to deposit the fake notes in his account,” he said.
“The mobile banking agent first required to verify the notes, and called police officers after realizing that all the notes were counterfeit, who arrested the suspect at the scene of crime,” IP Gakwaya said.
“Mobile banking agents, money changers including forex bureaus and owners of small businesses are the majority targeted by these fraudsters circulating fake monies. We urge people to always be vigilant, check the notes thoroughly to avoid losses but also be quick to call the police to ensure that such criminals are arrested,” he noted. Read more
Karongi: Islamic community in anti-drugs awareness drive
The Imam of the Western region, Sheikh Hamad Iyakaremye has urged the Muslim youth in Karongi District to live by the Islamic faith and beliefs, and desist from all illegal and criminal acts.
While addressing over one hundred youth including students currently in holidays, sheikh Iyakaremye reminded the young generation that abusing illicit drugs and extremism are against the Islamic faith.
“Don’t be misled from attaining your education and development dreams. Abusing illicit drugs or dealing in psychotropic substances, and engaging in extremism acts are criminal. As Rwandan youth, you are expected to act exemplary and partner with security organs to fight all sorts of unlawful acts,” Sheikh Iyakaremye told the youth. Read more
60 boxes of smuggled plastic bags intercepted in Burera
Police in Burera District have intercepted a vehicle loaded with 60 boxes of the banned plastic bags, which were being sneaked into the country.
The non-biodegradable polythene bags were being trafficked alongside other illegal goods, in a vehicle registration number RAD 870M, which was also impounded, Police said.
Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira said that the vehicle was intercepted by the marines unit after loading the illegal goods in the vehicle, which had been trafficked through Lake Burera.
“The vehicle was intercepted at about 9pm in Nyamabuye Cell of Kagogo Sect loaded with 60 boxes of plastic bags and 60 boxes of Blue Sky – an illicit gin,” IP Gasasira said.
“Two people, who were trafficking the unlawful commodities have also been taken into custody,” he added. Read more

Police recover laptops stolen from school in Gasabo
Police in Gasabo District have recovered four laptops, which are among those stolen from Groupe Scolaire Gisozi, last week.
Suspected thieves broke into the computer laboratory of the school in the night of December 17, and stole seven laptops.
Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, said that two people including a student at the same school, found with the four recovered laptops, are currently in Police custody. Read more

A total of 127 Police officers, on December 17, completed a ‘Non-Commissioned Officers’ Course’ at the Police Training School (PTS) in Gishari, Rwamagana District.
The eleven-week compulsory course for NCOs is designed to further improve the skills of the officers in various fields of Policing. Read more
Breaking chain of drug supply: 400kgs of cannabis seized
Ongoing operations to break illicit drugs’ supply chains impounded a vehicle and a motorcycle after they were intercepted trafficking about 400 kilogrammes of cannabis.
The vehicle, Toyota Carina registration number RAD 252G was intercepted in Mukamira Sector along Rubavu-Nyabihu highway transporting 320kgs of cannabis.
“There was information that a vehicle was headed to Nyabihu from Rubavu loaded with sacks of cannabis,” Inspector of Police (IP) Eulade Gakwaya, Police spokesperson for the Western region, said. Read more
