[PHOTOS]: Police launch road safety campaign

The State Minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure in charge of Transport, Eng. Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye said the government is reviewing laws on road safety to increase penalties against traffic violators, whose behaviors continue to cause fatal accidents.

The State Minister was speaking in Musanze District where he officiated at the launch of the road safety campaign.

The countrywide campaign, which will last for a month is held under the theme: "Know and Respect Traffic Rules to Save Lives."

"The government is constructing more roads, but it's one thing to have goods roads and another to keep them safe. We are not constructing roads to kill people... we are building roads to further improve the livelihoods of the people," said the State Minister. Read more

Two suspected impersonators arrested in Kigali

Police in the City of Kigali arrested two people for allegedly masquerading as government officials to fleece people.

Antoinette Nibagwire and Eric Iradukunda were arrested in Gasabo and Kicukiro districts, respectively.

Nibagirwa was arrested from Rusororo sector in Kabuga village, was impersonating a Police officer and extorting money from people with expired drivers’ permits with a promise to renew them without due process. She was found with seven driver's permit of different people, whom she had already conned.

Meanwhile, Iradukunda was caught red-handed passing off as a local council official, ordering the closure of shops and bars in Gako Village in Masaka sector, accusing them of breaking the law. Read more

Youth human security activities continue in Nyamasheke and Ngororero

The Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) human security activities launched last week, continued in Nyamasheke and Ngororero districts where the youth engaged in various community development activities.

In Nyamasheke, the youth constructed a house of a single mother in Gitwa of Bushenge Sector.

The mother of two was abandoned by her husband, and she was being sheltered by neighbours. Read more

Cracking down on fraud in mineral business

Recently, a foreign national was approached by a group of people said to be dealing in mineral business, and made him believe that they can supply him the 50kgs of gold, which he wanted.

The two parties agreed on the terms; the buyer was to incur all expenses including ground transport, declaration, taxes and laboratory qualitative analysis costs, among others.

The agreement settled at excess of US$1 million.

Fast forward, the suppliers delivered – at least at the knowledge of the buyer at the time. The buyer was given the sample, which he took to Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMPGB) laboratory services. The lab results proved that the samples were genuine, according to the issued certificate.

The suppliers secured the declaration certificate from Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), which also specified that over Rwf14 million would be paid in taxes.

With declaration and lab qualitative analysis certificates, the buyer couldn’t doubt any further; at this time, he had already paid US$105, 000 to the suppliers, with the balance to be paid at an agreed later date. Read more

Conserving nature: More 9600 trees planted in Nyaruguru

The joint afforestation exercise between Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the Ministry of Lands and Forestry, continued in Nyaruguru District where thousands of residents joined the Police to plant about 9600 trees.

The agreement between RNP and the ministry specifies planting at least 27, 000 hectares of trees across the country, with 22000 on agroforestry land and 5000 on hilly areas. 

About 4000 residents as well as the army and local leaders joined the Police in planting trees in Nyaruguru on the six hectares land.

The vice mayor of Nyaruguru in charge of Social Affairs, Collette Kayitesi, while addressing thousands of participants shortly after the exercise, thanked the residents for the big turn up, and for he continued partnership in various security and development activities. Read more

Three arrested with forged vehicle inspection stickers

Three men were arrested in Kigali in connection with forging vehicle mechanical inspection certificate stickers.

Marcel Ndacyayishimira, 32, Jean de Dieu Buhoro, 24, and Emmanuel Habyarimana, 37, all residents of Kimironko sector in Gasabo District found in possession of 30 forged stickers, Chief Supt. Dieudonné Banyundo, the Commanding Officer for the motor vehicle mechanical inspection centre, said.

"The successful operation was facilitated by credible information we received from members of the public about a racket in Kimironko that was attempting to fleece people selling them forged stickers lying that they got them from police,,"Chief Supt. Banyundo said. Read more

[PHOTOS]: Youth plant 30, 000 trees as they launch human security activities

The implementation of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) memorandum of understanding signed recently with the Ministry of Lands and Forestry on environmental conservation, started over the weekend with members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing planting at least 30, 000 trees in different parts of the country.

The MoU partly specifies planting 27000 hectares of trees countrywide; 22000 hectares on agroforestry land and 5000 hectares on hilly area

he planting of trees was part of the official launch of the youth volunteers’ community development and human security activities, marked by Umuganda on November 11. The exercise brought together Police, army, local leaders and residents in their respective areas.

The trees were planted on about 40 hectares of agroforestry land. About 9000 trees were planted in Ayabaramba in Mageragere, Nyarugenge District; 8000 (16 hectares) in Ruhango District; 2153 trees in Gabiro Cell of Gatebe Sector in Burera District; and 6323 trees in Gashuma village of Nyakagarama in Rukomo Sector, Nyagatare District. PHOTOS]: Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Juba join Umuganda in IDP camps

The Rwandan Police peacekeepers serving under the United Nation Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), on November 11, introduced communal activities best known as Umuganda, to ensure hygiene, sanitation and other human security activities in Internally Displaced Camps.

The Rwandan homegrown solution initiative was lunched in POC 3, an IDP camp that accommodates over 33, 000 internally displaced South Sudanese.

POC 3 is under the protection of Rwanda police peacekeepers.

The peacekeepers, who were joined by the camp community leadership and the people, cleared bushes, cleaned the streets, water trenches and collected littered waste including plastic bags. Read more
