Police Week: Campaign to promote road safety launched

Rwanda National Police (RNP) launched the nationwide campaign to sensitize all categories of road users on traffic rules and regulations so as to promote road safety.

The week-long campaign conducted concurrently across the country is part of the ongoing Police Week launched last week as part of the RNP 18th anniversary.

While addressing thousands of motorcyclists at Amahoro stadium, the State Minister for Transport in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Eng. Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye said that the “life of every Rwandan is valuable.” Read more

IGP Gasana urge private security service providers on professionalism

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana urged private security service providers to stay on course, be defined by professionalism and high level of discipline.

The Police Chief made the remarks while speaking at a one-day consultative meeting of supervisors of private security companies held at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) headquarters in Kacyiru.

The meeting aimed at looking into how best the services offered by the private security firms can be streamlined and made more professional. Read more

Police takes road safety campaign on highways

The road safety campaign week continued last Friday on all highways countrywide as Police officers engaged drivers and their passengers on traffic rules and regulations to ensure behavior change and promote road safety.

In the City of Kigali, officers educated passengers, drivers and motorcyclists on all highways leading to the capital.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, while addressing passengers and drivers in Rugende along Kigali-Rwamagana highway, said that all road users are have the right to be safe on the road and to arrive to their respective destinations safe, which calls for everyone’s responsibility to ensure that safety standards are observed. RNP, RURA discuss robust road safety culture

Despite continued reduction of road traffic accidents and fatalities, there is need to come up with stringent measures to prevent every life, the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety department in Rwanda National Police, Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, said.

CP Mujiji made the remarks on May 24, during a consultative meeting between RNP, Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) and owners or heads of transport companies.

Statistics indicate that fatalities caused by public services vehicles and trucks reduced to 40 per cent and 23 percent, respectively in the last four months compared to the same period last year. Read more

Motorcyclists commit to promote road safety

Commercial motorcyclists in the City of Kigali have committed to respect road safety standards so as to prevent accidents.

They the commitment this Saturday during a meeting in Kimihurura Sector of Gasabo District.

Daniel Ngarambe, the head of federation of motorcycle cooperatives, said that the federations has taken steps to ensure behavioral change among their members towards road safety, crime prevention and supporting development activities. Read more

Five people arrested with smuggled shoes, clothes

Five people have been arrested in Nyagatare and Kirehe districts after they were found smuggling bales of shoes and clothes into the country.

In an operation conducted on May 23 in Nyagatare, Police and Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) detectives seized eight bales of shoes in the house of one Celestin Twagirumukiza in Rwempasha Sector.

“We had received information about bales of shoes sneaked and were being taken to Twagirumukiza’s house. We trailed the smugglers and apprehended them as soon as they arrived at Twagirumukiza’s house, arrested four smugglers and impounded the smuggled goods,” said Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson. Police intercepts 1700kgs of smuggled minerals

Police in Burera District, in partnership with Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB), on May 22, intercepted a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying 30 sacks of smuggled minerals weighing 1700kgs.

The vehicle with plate number RAB 038 E, carrying wolfram and cassiterite was intercepted as it entered Rwanda from Uganda through a porous border in Buhita sector.

Police also arrested Sylvestre Harelimana the driver and Leonard Nsengimana co-driver, the only two people who were on board, and handed them over to RIB.

The Northern Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana said: “Residents, who reside around Buhita borderline informed us that there was a vehicle overloaded with mineral sacks." Read more

Six motorcycles intercepted trafficking drugs

Police in Nyagatare District impounded six motorcycles that were intercepted trafficking contrabands.

According to the Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the motorcycles were impounded in operations conducted over the weekend.

“We also arrested seven suspects, six of them motorcyclists who were riding the motorcycles that were transporting assorted gins. We handed them over to Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB),” the spokesperson said. Read more

Fighting illicit drugs headline Umugoroba w’ababyeyi

Fighting trafficking, making, sell and use of illicit drugs took the centre of discussions as Rulindo residents gathered in Umugoroba w'Ababyeyi in their respective communities on May 20.

Umugoroba w'Ababyeyi loosely translated as “evening of parents” is a customary social coercion, which brings together parents or elders in their respective communities to discuss social and security issues affecting their communities and come up with remedies.

Parents and elders in all the 17 sectors of Rulindo District on Sunday put discussions against drugs at the centre stage as part of the ongoing effort to prevent the local market but also report dealers to facilitate Police operations against chains of supply.

The all-out community gatherings were in line with the Police Week activities that put major focus on raising awareness against drugs in its first week. Read more

Police recovers Rwf20 million stolen from businessman

Police in Kayonza District have recovered US$22,100, and Rwf200, 000 that was stolen from a local businessman.

The money was stolen from Jean Nepo Mazimpaka, who deals in minerals, on May 18 after thieves broke into his car as it was parked on the streets of Kayonza town.

Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, said that the money was recovered from five people, who connived in the theft, and who are already in Police custody. Read more
