[PHOTOS]: RNP certify 27 new K-9 handlers and dogs
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, on Friday, presided over the pass out of 27 dog handlers at the Canine Brigade headquarters in Masoro, Gasabo District.
Also passed out are 27 K-9 that completed the similar two-week intensive training offered by the Police Dog Center Holland that also supplied the highly skilled sniffer dogs.
K-9 means a dog that is specifically trained to assist Police and other law enforcement personnel in, for example, searching for drugs and explosives, locating missing people, finding crime scene evidence, and protecting their handlers. Read more
[PHOTOS]: Gatsibo: Crime-free village residents on capacity building tour
A delegation of 30 residents of Kagarama, a crime free village in Nyamirama Cell, Gitoki Sector in Gatsibo District, on Thursday conducted a tour in the City of Kigali in a bid to further upgrade their understanding in the implementation of the community policing initiatives.
The delegation headed by the vice mayor of Gatsibo in charge of Social Affairs, Theogene Manzi, included the village leader and his committee, elders and the youngsters.
Kagarama has not registered a crime in the last three years, thanks to the initiatives by the residents in partnership with their village leaders.
They visited the Rwanda National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, where they were received and briefed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana.
They also visited the Campaign against Genocide Museum at the Parliamentary Building and Kigali Convention Centre. Read more
Stolen 2-month old baby rescued
A two-month old baby, who was stolen recently in Gitega Sector of Nyarugenge District, was rescued on Friday and reunited with the mother.
The baby had been stolen by a woman identified as Beatrice Nyirankuriza, 30, who posed as a friend and a neighbor of the baby’s mothers.
Nyirankuriza had made her husband believe that she was pregnant. She left for her parents’ home in Kamonyi District a fortnight ago from where she phoned her husband to tell her the fake news that she had given birth. Read more
[PHOTOS]: Top UN officials visit Rwandan Police contingent in Haiti
The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations (ASG-DPKO) Bintou Keita, on February 8, met the Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU) contingent serving under the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH).
Keita, who commended Rwanda for its commitment to international peace, was accompanied by MINUJUSTH Police Commissioner, Brig Gen Georges-Pierre Monchotte and the Governor of Grande-Anse, which hosts the Rwandan camp, among other officials.
The visit was in line with the implementation of the ‘UN Security Council Bench-marked Exit Strategy’ for MINUJUSTH. Read more
CYBER CRIME: Police thwart criminal move targeting banking system
Police in Rwamagana District foiled a bank robbery and arrested a suspected main-brain identified as Emmanuel Shumbusho.
Shumbusho was arrested in the act on Thursday as he attempted to make a doubt withdrawal amounting to Rwf6, 900, 000 using a mobile banking system and withdrawing from the teller, Police said. Read more
Police conducts operation against errant drivers
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) department of Traffic and Road Safety started a mass operation on roads and highways to ensure that all road safety standards are adhered to as means to further curb fatalities.
The operation follows various serious accident reports largely caused by use of phone while driving, speeding, reckless maneuvers, mechanical faults and failure to respect right to way especially for pedestrians.
In an operation conducted along Nyabugogo-Muhima-City centre, for example, traffic officers caught about 45 vehicles within a space of one hour, whose drivers were using mobile handsets while driving. Read more
Police turns focus to private vehicles to curb road accidents
Rwanda National Police (RNP) warned reckless drivers especially those driving private automobiles, whose actions cause fatalities.
The January road safety status puts privately owned vehicles and motorcycles at the top of the majority involved or cause accidents.
At least 78 accidents were registered as ‘serious’ majority involving private vehicles, 14 motorcyclists or their passengers, 12 pedestrians and 12 cyclists.
At least 53 accidents were caused by over speeding, 52 by careless maneuvers, and 61 resulted from violation of right of way.
About 22 accidents involved drivers that lacked driver’s license, according to the report, who were also found to have no knowledge on road safety standards.
Men also comprise the majority 141 drivers involved in accidents compared to 67 women in the same period. Read more
Fighting motorcycle theft paying off
Intensified operations against motorcycle theft continue to pay-off both in terms of recovering those stolen and arresting people behind the criminal behavior, Rwanda National Police (RNP) said.
Statistics indicate that twelve motorcycles have been reported at different police stations as stolen since the beginning of this year.
“Through the community policing bond with the people, we have been able to recover ten out of 12 motorcycles stolen this year. We have also arrested ten people behind these series of theft, and all of them were caught red-handed either trying to cross the borders or using them after changing plate numbers,” said RNP spokesperson, Commissioner (CP) Theos Badege. [PHOTOS]: Police Handball Club wins Heroes’ Day Cup
Police Handball Club won their record fifth Heroes' Day Cup after overcoming APR 46-37 in the finals played at Kimisagara Youth Centre.
In the build up to the finals, the law enforcers topped Group B after beating Groupe Scholaire de la Salle 46-10; GS St. Aloys of Rwamagana 31-19; and defeated GS Munyove of Rusizi 37-23.
They also eliminated Inkumburwa 48-19 in the semi-finals to set the final encounter with the defending champions APR, who also saw off ADEGI. Read more
