Police commend public conduct during festive season
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has commended the general public for their “responsible and good conduct”, which facilitated “smooth, calm and safety” in the just concluded festive period.
“Generally, the festive season was peaceful; there was general compliance with the law by organisers of musical and entertainment shows, churches, and road users,” RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege, said.
ACP Badege thanked the role of the general public and sister security institutions like Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), partners including local leaders, administrative security organ - DASSO - for the “strong partnership” throughout the year, which further improved the homeland security.
“Like previous years, 2017 has been a year of peace, safe and secure largely due to strong partnership with all entities to fight and prevent crimes, and cooperation in human security activities, ” he said.
He, however, said that police recorded two fatal accidents in these festivities, one of them in Kigali caused by drunk-driving.

According to Police statistics, crimes reduced by 5.4 percent from 17600 total crimes reported in 2016 to about 16800 recorded last year. Read more
Fighting drug abuse: Seized 9000 litres of illicit brew poured in Rwamagana
About 9000 litres of locally made illicit brew were seized in a police-led operation conducted in Rwamagana District on December 4.
The substances were seized from two illegal distilleries in Karenge and Fumbwe sectors. The psychotropic substances were disposed of in presence of hundreds of residents, who they were urged to report people in their communities that distill such substances.
The illicit brew said to be made out of mixed bricks, sorghum flour, fertilizers, sugarcane residues, sugar and water, among others.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, while addressing residents shortly after disposing of the substances, reminded them that starting a distillery one has to be authorized and to use specified ingredients that are not harmful to consumers.
“This is an ongoing operation countrywide, and if you know that you are involved in making or selling these substances you will be arrested,” CIP Kanamugire emphasized. Read more
Musanze: Governor Gatabazi calls for renewed commitment against GBV, drug abuse
The Governor of the Northern Province, Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi has called upon residents of Musanze District to make personal and collective efforts to fight drug abuse and gender based violence by reporting dealers and affected families, respectively.
The Governor observed that cases of domestic assault, child abuse and school dropouts are associated with drug abuse or committed by people under the influence of illicit drugs.
He made the call, yesterday, while addressing hundreds of residents of Rwaza Sector shortly after a special communal exercise to construct 13 classrooms in Kabushinge Cell.
Police officers, headed by the District Police Commander of Musanze, Supt. Aphrodis Gashumba as well as other security organs, took part in Umuganda to construct classrooms. Read more
Woman straps illicit drugs on baby, arrested
On Friday passengers were left dazed and confused after a driver of the vehicle they were traveling in discovered that a woman who was among the passengers was trafficking contrabands.
The woman, Aline Uwimbabazi, was carrying a six month old baby and had strapped the drugs around the baby on her back.
Uwimbabazi tried to conceal 120 sachets of Zebra Waragi, an illegal gin that is commonly packed in plastic bags.
The driver of the vehicle that was from Nyagatare to Kigali noticed something strange about the way Uwimbabazi had strapped the baby and immediately notified police.
The Eastern Province Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire commended the vigilance of the driver in reporting the suspicious behavior. Read more
Improved welfare a human security factor, Governor Mureshyankwano tells Nyaruguru residents
The Southern Province Governor, Marie Rose Mureshyankwano has challenged residents of Nyaruguru District to embrace the value of hard work, engage into more developmental activities to break the vicious circle of poverty, which is a major human security factor.
The Governor was speaking on December 3 in Ngoma Sector during the event to support the disadvantaged families.
At least 100 people were given health insurance premium – mutuelle de sante – while three households were given a cow each.
She observed that such support is meant to improve their good wellbeing and to prevent insecurities brought by poverty.
“Where there is poverty, criminality in the name of looking for survival is inevitable. You have to utilize such support and all available avenues to improve your standards of living,” Governor Mureshyankwano said. Read more
