Rwanda, Italy Police Chiefs meet in Rome

On the invitation of the Commander General of Carabinieri – the Italian Police, Gen Giovanni Nistri, the Inspector General (IGP) of Rwanda National Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana is in Rome for a follow up on the existing cooperation between the two police forces. The partnership is hinged on the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which has seen refreshing cooperation mainly focusing on capacity building.During the visit, the two Police Chiefs evaluated the progress of the revised partnership that is pinned on the MoU, which was signed and entered into force early last year, and have recommitted to moving it to a much higher level. Security organs join residents of Bumbogo in Umuganda

Police and military officers, this Saturday, joined residents of Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District in a monthly communal work-- Umuganda--where they engaged in various human security activities. Close to 2000 residents of Bumbogo and neighboring communities took part in the monthly exercise. The Umuganda was marked with the rehabilitating of Birambo-Kinyinya road, which had been affected by the recent heavy downpour. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Felly Rutagerura Bahizi, the Central Regional Police Commander, while addressing the residents after the communal exercise, commended the spirit of patriotism and partnership in all spheres of security and development.  Sniffer dogs trace drug dealers, seven arrested

An operation against narcotics continued this Thursday in Musanze District where sniffer dogs traced seven suspected drug dealers, who were arrested. Varied quantities of cannabis were also recovered from the suspects’ homes, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Northern region Police spokesperson, said. CIP Twizeyimana identified the suspects as Marie Claire Uwimana, 24, Marthe Nyiramahoro 60; Asumani Niyonkuru, 33; Nadia Muhawenimana; Fatuma Sikuyuwa, 42; Theogene Uwiringiyimana, 24; and Hadja Mbetse, 30. RNP launches Taekwondo club

Rwanda National Police (RNP), yesterday, officially launched its Taekwondo club in an event that was marked with skills demonstrations at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru. The event was also witnessed by officials from Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF). Taekwondo is a martial arts game that features self defense, physical, health and esteem development. The launch was also attended by the emeritus president of RTF, Master Martin Koonce, who is also a member of African Taekwondo Union (AFTU). Read More

Nyarugenge: Vehicle intercepted transporting illicit brew

A vehicle registration number RAA 512D, Toyota Hiace type was intercepted on April 25 in Nyarugenge District while transporting locally made illicit gin. The driver of the impounded vehicle identified as Mazimpaka Epaphrodite was also taken into custody “The vehicle was intercepted at Giti k’Inyoni in Kigali Sector loaded with jerrycans of locally made illicit brew, and it was impounded to Kigali station, where the suspect is also detained,” Senior Supt. Vehicle mechanical inspection: Mobile Test Lane taken to Northern Province

The mobile vehicle mechanical inspection test lane started its operations in Musanze District on Wednesday to test the roadworthiness of automobiles operating in some parts of the Northern Province. The mobile test lane is meant to service vehicles operating in the countryside or far from the main mechanical inspection centres on Remera in the City of Kigali and Gishari in Rwamagana strict. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, the mobile test lane will be stationed at Ubworoherane stadium in Musanze until May 4. Eight arrested in separate foiled theft attempts in Kigali

Separate Police operations conducted in Kigali in on Wednesday arrested at least suspected thieves, who were attempting to break into residential and business houses. The suspects were especially targeting electronics, according to the Police. “Four of the suspects were arrested in Ngara Cell, Bumbogo Sector in Gasabo District where they had broken into a house and stole a television set, gas cylinder, home theater, decoder and other interiors,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.  Read More

Illegal distillery closed in Kigali, nine arrested

Security organs in partnership with Rwanda Standards Bureau (RSB) have closed a brewery plant in Muhima Sector, Nyarugenge District, which was operating illegally. The distillation plant called Herboristerie Maranatha Hema Ltd was producing Kambuca, an alcoholic drink that is said to be substandard and toxic. At least 10, 000 litres of Kambuca were also seized during the operation conducted on Tuesday. Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, said that the owner of the plant identified as Martin Maniraguha was operating illegally without a license. Read More

Drivers urged to be mindful of harsh weather conditions

Motorists have again been urged to take caution while on the road following recent heavy downpours that batter roads and likely to pose danger if drivers don’t take caution. The heavy rains currently being experienced across the country have led to some incidents where trucks slid off the road and some vehicles got stuck. Outlining the safety precautions drivers, passengers and pedestrians need to take, the Spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety Department of Rwanda National Police, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Ndushabanda said that during heavy rainfall, there are possibilities of tree falling in roads, floods or landslides of which drivers need to be more conscious of. Police intensifies crackdown on stolen minerals

Separate but targeted police operations in Gasabo and Gakenke Districts on April 22, have led to the recovery of over 700 kilograms of minerals that mysteriously went missing from mining concessions in Rulindo and Gasabo. In Gakenke District Police recovered 669 kilograms of Wolfram recently stolen from Gifurwe Mining and Processing Ltd. Police said Investigators apprehended Evariste Nsengiyumva 34, who was intercepted at   Rwata Village, Rukore cell in Kamubuga Sector riding on a motorcycle with the mineral. The suspect who is currently detained at Rusarabuye Police Station failed to justify legal possession of the mineral. Read More

Poacher arrested in Nyungwe with three kills

Police have arrested Pontien Barushyihana, a poacher, who was found carrying four animals he had trapped and killed in Nyungwe National Park on the side of Bweyeye sector in Rusizi District. Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the police spokesperson for the Western region confirmed the development and said that the suspect had killed three yellow-backed duiker and one L'Hoest's monkey. The yellow-backed duiker (locally known as Ifumberi) is a forest dwelling antelope in the order Artiodactyla from the family Bovidae. Yellow-backed duikers are the most widely distributed of all duikers while the L'Hoest's monkey (locally known as Icyondi), or mountain monkey, have a dark coat and can be distinguished by a characteristic white beard.
