Rwanda National Police (RNP), Community Policing Department on Wednesday opened a five-day training of community policing committees (CPCs) who will train others from all districts of Western Region.

The training was attended by 140 participants from Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rutsiro, Karongi and Ngororero districts that make the Western Region.

The five-day training will be focusing on environmental protection, fighting against the use illicit drugs, fighting early teenage pregnancies and fighting gender based violence in community.

Deputy commissioner for Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Murenzi Sebakondo explained that the training started in Western Region, but will be extended to the whole country.

“The aim of the training is to provide skills to the CPC’s, who will train other citizens on their role in crime prevention and raising awareness on laws and punishments” ACP Sebakondo said.

Community policing has gained momentum in recent years as Rwanda National Police and community leaders search for more effective ways to promote public safety.

“RNP always sensitizes the public on the dangers and ill effects of crime, the public is also taught how to become problem solvers rather than trouble makers, thus enhancing the quality of life in their communities.’’ ACP Sebakondo added.

Community policing increases the sense of responsibility, whereby citizens understand their role in partnering with Police in solving crimes and other challenges.
