RNP takes Gerayo Amahoro campaign to truck drivers

Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with MTN-Rwanda, on November 26, extended the road safety awareness campaign to truck drivers operating in Agakiriro in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District.

The truck drivers were urged to desist from distractive driving especially using mobile phones, one of the common behaviours in drivers leading to fatal accidents.

The road safety campaign in truck drivers is part of 52 weeks of Gerayo Amahoro, which entered its 29th week on Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police  (SSP) Khalid Kabasha, the Deputy Commissioner for Public Relation and Media said that using a mobile phone while driving means you are diverting your attention from the wheel and the road.

"A phone is distractive; you take your eyes off the road and the hand off the steering, your attention becomes devided, which is a recipe for serious crashes. When driving, you should have maximum control of the vehicle and focus on the road," SSP Kabasha said.

He added: "When you are distracted you don't observe the traffic signposts, keep in your driving lane or know when to brake; this is dangerous to your life, the people on board, any other person on road and property."

Isaac Hakizimana, the head of CTCG, a cooperative of truck drivers operating in Gisozi, thanked Rwanda National Police for bringing GerayoAmahoro campaign to their drivers.

"We are drivers and road users, so Gerayo Amahoro is equally our responsibility, and these safety messages are key for our safety and road security in general," Hakizimana said.
