Rwanda National Police (RNP), on September 21, engaged about 400 students GS Kinyababa in Burera District in a discussion to enlighten them about human trafficking and the tricks traffickers use to lure them into the modern-day slavery and ordeals involved.
Police also tutored students about their rights and urged them to champion the protection of child rights.
The students were also told that youth are the main target by traffickers and urged to be on the lookout for anyone who may be offering them jobs abroad or promising a better life far away from home, which is one way to traffic them.
In a message delivered by the Executive Secretary of Kinyababa Sector, Mary Nyirasafari, along with the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Phelin Nshimiyumukiza, students were also tutored on effects of drug abuse and their role in environmental protection.
Nyirasafari told the students and teachers that the anti-human trafficking campaign is generally aimed at “keeping Rwandans safe” especially the youth.
She urged them to focus on their education and report injustices their face or witness in their communities.
The DCLO explained that although some victims of human trafficking are taken by use of force, threat or abduction, majority cases in Rwanda are through deceit where the targets are meant to believe that there is a better life where they are headed.
“What happens out there is very brutal; girls and sometimes boys are forced into prostitution, or forced labour. They are stripped of their rights, mistreated and tortured,” he said.
“How do you come to an agreement with a stranger who is offering you a lot that you couldn’t easily get from home, and on top of that asks you not to inform anyone about the deal. Such offers aren’t rosy; whenever you come across such a case talk to people and report to police immediately.”
As Part of the crime prevention mechanisms, AIP Nshimiyumukiza urged students not to abuse drugs and went on to highlight diverse effect of drug consumption.
