Rwanda National Police (RNP) has recovered 300, 000 Euros, approximately Rwf291 million, that was stolen from UAE Exchange Company in Nyarugenge District, last week.
The money was recovered on Saturday in Gatsibo District from two suspects currently in Police custody.
Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu identified the suspects as Alexis Nkubito, an employee of the same company, and Pierre Nkubana, his young brother.
It is said that Nkubito was on July 27, instructed by his boss to send 3 million euros to Dubai. However, Nkubito sent only 2.7 million Euros only.
It was until the recipients in China notified the sending company that they had received less the amount, that the latter realized they had been robbed.
"UAE Exchange Company filed a theft case at Nyarugenge Police station on July 29, and investigations were immediately launched," Supt. Hitayezu said.
"We first located and arrested Nkubito as the prime suspect, before he could escape, shortly after the complaint was filed. Through interrogations and tracking leads, investigators tracked Nkubana to Gatsibo, where he was arrested with all the money later that evening," he added.
"Owners of the money are aware of all the successfully investigation processes; we are just formalizing the process to give them their money. We are also putting together the dossier of the two suspects to be forwarded to prosecution for further judicial proceedings," the spokesperson said.
Early this month, Police also recovered Rwf1.3 million stolen by a house-help in Kicukiro.
In April this year, Police also recovered Rwf1.4million and US$100, also stolen by a house help in Kigali after fabricating his boss' bedroom key.
In December last year, another €10,780 (approx. Rwf9.2 million) and Rwf100,000 that had been stolen Kigali was also recovered.
Also in 2015, Police recovered US$618,000 that had been stolen from an Indian proprietor of Golden Gold, a company dealing in the trade of minerals.
All these successful interventions, according to Hitayezu, were informed by timely reporting.
"Real time reporting and information sharing on any illegal and criminal act facilitates police's rapid response to arrest suspects and recover anything stolen or missing," he said.
