Police officers throughout the country on July 25, joined residents in their communities to participate in the monthly “Umuganda” community service which is instrumental in improving the general environment on which Rwanda’s sustainable development is built.
Officers attached to the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Headquarters in Kacyiru conducted Umuganda by clearing overgrown bushes around the headquarters and unclogging trenches, among other activities.
They were joined by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, DIGP Marizamunda, commended the officers for their selfless and professional services they render to their country, and urged them to always be active and participate in home-grown development initiatives.
"It is through home-grown solution like Umuganda that our country will realise its development targets. We should encourage residents to always be involved – and when they see us happily and actively participating in our home-grown solutions, it encourages them to also be part and play thier role,” he said.
“Therefore we must all work hard and put our energy together in transforming our communities and the country at large. Our primary work is to maintain law and order but we are also obliged to utilise our energy and participate in national development programmes," he said.
He also noted that through Umuganda, police officers are offered an important channel through which they can interact with residents and share vital information that facilitates enforcement of the law.
He also urged the officers increase their interaction with residents and discuss challenges and solutions to community, as well as how they can collaborate through community policing to prevent and fight illegal criminals activities.
