The Rwanda National Police, on September 27 joined residents of Nyanza district in a monthly community exercise – umuganda – where they rehabilitated feeder roads in Busasamana Sector that link communities to business centres.
They also cleared plots where the RNP intends to construct four of the five houses it donated to vulnerable families in the district.
The first house worth Rwf9.5 million was handed to the beneficiary in June during the annual Police Week exercise.
The donation falls in the force’s human security programmes and the memorandum of understanding signed between RNP and Nyanza in particular.
The RNP supports community development in health, poverty eradication through giving heifer and tree planting to prevent soil erosion and environmental protection.
The Governor of the Southern Province, Alphonse Munyentwari, shortly after the community work, commended Rwanda National Police for its continued effort to support community development and maintaining public order.
He appealed to residents to always work together with police participate in such activities that contribute to national development.
The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K Gasana said RNP considers proactive policing through Police-public partnership as an effective approach in crime prevention.
The force, he noted, supports community development as one way of preventing crimes arising out of poverty and ignorance.
“Peace cannot be reached if we still have homeless families and development would not be achieved if there is no security and that’s the reason police is engaged in such development activities” IGP Gasana said
