Security was stable in 2019, says Police

The security situation was "stable" in the year 2019 thanks to public ownership through community policing, Rwanda National Police (RNP) said on Friday.

This was during the press conference, which highlighted the security situation in the year under review.

"Increased operations, strengthened community policing and working with different groups facilitated successful response to attacks in some parts of our country, fighting drugs, protection of vulnerable groups like children," said CP Kabera.

In 2019, RNP secured a total of 226 local and foreign events, including Youth Connekt, ICASA, Global Gender Summit, spiritual pilgrims and trade shows, among others. Read more

New Year's Eve: Police urges public to enjoy responsibly


With Rwandans counting hours to usher in the New Year, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has appealed to the general public to avoid and report anything that can affect safe celebrations and the wellbeing of the people.

RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera emphasized “safety first and careful celebrations” to ensure that no life or property is lost.

He noted that “celebrations should be in compliance with the law” and “not at the expense of other people’s beliefs and rights.” Read more

Police urges transporters to facilitate students going back to school


Rwanda National Police (RNP) has urged public transporters, head-teachers and parents to facilitate and ensure the safety of students, who are going back to school.

According to the Ministry of Education, the first term for the academic year 2020, kicks off on Monday, January, 6.

Students started heading to school this Friday depending on the proximity of the schools.

Friday, January, 3, is reserved for students going to schools in Muhanga, Kamonyi, Nyanza, Huye, Rusizi, Nyamasheke, and the City of Kigali. Read more

Suspected Police impersonators arrested in driver's license fraud


Rwanda National Police (RNP) has arrested three men, who were masquerading as one of their own and defrauding people.

Daniel Ndagijimana, who has been guising as 'Chief Inspector of Police Yves Babu', Christian Ngirimana and Mussa Ndagijimana were paraded to the media on Monday at Kigali Metropolitan Police.

Daniel Ndagijimana is said to be the ringleader, who recruited Ngirimana, Mussa and another accomplice still at large, into the scam. Read more

Southern Province: Police rescues 22 minors from child labor


Police in the Southern region has warned parents and residents against using minors in hectic activities, which amounts to child labour.

The warning follows 22 children who were recently rescued from rice plantations while others were found carrying crates of beer.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, 14 children were being used to distribute beer to different bars and customers in Muganza sector of Nyaruguru District, during the festive season. Read more

Public warned against illegal trade in petroleum products


Rwanda National Police (RNP) has cautioned the public against storing and selling petroleum products in their houses, which is "unlawful, a disaster risk endangering occupants and neighbouring communities."

On Thursday, petroleum products ignited fire which destroyed part of a house in Mukura Sector, Huye District.

The house belongs to one Francois Hakizimana, 27, who was using it to store petroleum products which he was selling on black market, Police said. Read more

Kanyanga dealer arrested in Nyagatare


A man said to have been heading a ring that traffics kanyanga into the country was arrested on Wednesday in Nyagatare District.

Florant Nsengimana, 26, was intercepted by the Police in Rwempasha Sector. He was at the time delivering 40 litres of the banned crude gin to his retailers in Rwimiyaga Sector, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.

Over 200 cartons of trafficked polythene bags seized in Gatsibo


Police in Gatsibo District, on Monday, arrested two men with 226 cartons of outlawed polythene bags, which were sneaked into the country through an illegal border in Nyagatare District.

David Kamutima (driver) and Jean Bosco Manirakiza were at the time trafficking the non-biodegradable plastic bags in a vehicle RAA 024I when it was intercepted in Kabarore along Gatsibo-Kayonza highway.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the police spokesperson for the Eastern region, the vehicle was impounded at a Police checkpoint mounted in Bihinga village of Kabarore sector. Read more
