Rubavu: Cyclist intercepted trafficking narcotics concealed in onions

Police in Rubavu District arrested a commercial cyclist with 13kgs of cannabis.

The suspect, Elie Nsengiyumva, 20, was intercepted on Friday, August 21, in Nyundo Sector with the narcotics.

Nsengiyumva had concealed the narcotics in a sack of onions so as not to be identified and arrested, Police said.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson of the Western region, said that Nsengiyumva was reported by local residents. Read more

COVID-19: Fitness club closed over violations

The Ministry of Sports closed Cali Fitness club in Nyarutarama, Gasabo District for violating the directives on the prevention of further spread of novel Coronavirus.

In a letter dated August 20, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Shema-Maboko Didier noted that Cali Fitness club was not observing the safety instructions despite the previous warning, and ordered the immediate closure of their fitness activities. Read more

Nyagatare: Vehicle intercepted with smuggled minerals

A vehicle loaded with 350 kilogrammes of smuggledc cassiterite minerals was intercepted on Wednesday, August 19, in Matimba Sector, Nyagatare District.

The vehicle registration number RAA 208E, Toyota Hilux type, was driven by one Dieudonné Twerekane, 33, who was also taken into custody.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson of the Eastern region, said information about fraud was reported by a resident.

"Sacks of minerals were covered with cabbages in an attempt to distract security," said CIP Twizeyimana. Read more

Nyabihu: Woman intercepted trafficking polythene bags


A woman suspected of trafficking polythene bags into the country was intercepted on Tuesday, August 18, in Nyabihu District with 300 cartons of the non-biodegradable products.

Florence Nyinawamuntu, 26, was intercepted at a Police check-pointed along Kabaya-Mukamira road.

Nyinawamuntu was at the time traveling in a public vehicle when it was stopped and searched in Jomba Sector. Read more

WESTERN PROVINCE: Police burst racket of violent burglars


Police arrested ten people suspected to be members of the same racket behind series of violent theft in Rubavu and Rutsiro districts.

The group include those, who were allegedly breaking into houses, attacking and robbing shops and petrol stations. Among the arrested are the ringleaders, who were helping to transport the stolen items and looking for buyers.

The suspects were shown to the media in Rubavu District on Tuesday, August 18.

Their arrest came in a wake of series of violent burglaries in Rubavu and Rutsiro districts between June and July, in which a number of people were attacked and injured with machetes and other weapons. Read more
