Road safety should be a choice, says Minister Busingye

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye, said that Rwanda is on course to achieving record road safety levels and that government efforts to save lives on road will not be spared.

The Minister, who was addressing the media this Thursday at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru, said that the “road safety sector has assumed ownership” but added that “safety on road should be a choice.”

The Police-Media interaction session was also attended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Munyuza, Prosecutor General Jean Bosco Mutangana and the Secretary General of Rwanda Investigation Bureau, Col. Jeannot Ruhunga. Read more

Police officers donate blood

Police officers working at Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru, on Saturday, donated blood to boost the National Centre for Blood Transfusion (NCBT).

The voluntary blood donation came after the monthly communal work--Umuganda--which brought together Police officers operating at the General Headquarters.

The humanitarian act was presided over by Rwanda Biomedical Centre  (RBC) and it falls with the formal partnership between the two institutions entered into in 2017, to partner in matters related to health and security. Read more

NYAMASHEKE: Drug trafficker intercepted in Lake Kivu


A drug dealer was intercepted Saturday in Nyamasheke District as he attempted to traffic a sack of cannabis into the country through Lake Kivu.

Police said that Bertin Bagiriwabo Sembeba, 59, who was trafficking the narcotics in a boat from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was intercepted by fishermen at about 5:30am as he encroached on the shores of the lake at Kirambo landing site in Kanjongo Sector.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said that the sack of cannabis weighed 36kgs.Read more

Over 370 Police officers complete ‘Unit Training’


A total of 371 Police officers, last Friday, completed a two-week ‘Unit Training’ at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

Participants in the first intake were drawn from all regional, district and other territorial Police units across the country.

The course is designed to evaluate and harmonise on-job training of Police officers, enrich their skills in aspects of drills and duties, and skills at arms to further professionalise the force and ensure officers are guided by the Police doctrine.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, while closing the course, urged the trainees to utilize their skills to create positive change in their respective units, and ensure they share the skills with others. Read more

Child protection is a collective responsibility


Over the past few weeks, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has actively engaged in operations, sensitization campaigns and other activities dedicated to protecting children and implementing the law on child protection.

Article 6 of law No. 71/2018 of 31/08/2018 relating to the protection of the child defines a child as “any person under eighteen (18) years of age.”

The operations focuses mainly on people serving alcoholic beverages to minors, those working in mining and stone quarries, casual labourers in homes and in market places. Read more

UN Police course opens in Musanze


A cohort of 25 police officers from the Rwanda National Police on Monday started a three-week United Nations (UN) Individual Police Officers (IPOs) Course at the Rwanda Peace Academy in Musanze District.

The course is being conducted under the auspices of the UN through its Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

The course, according to officials, seeks to prepare and equip officers with relevant knowledge and skills that will enable them to perform the requisite police duties once deployed to UN missions as individual police officers. Read more

Police officers complete 'maritime operations course'


Thirty-six Police officers completed a 'comprehensive maritime operations course' as Rwanda National Police (RNP) continues to build its marine unit to tighten security in water bodies.

Six of the course participants were trained as trainers.

The pass-out of this intake, the second of its nature, was held on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rubavu District and presided over by the Commissioner for Operations and Public Order, Commissioner of Police (CP) George Rumanzi, who represented the RNP leadership.

CP Rumanzi said that such career courses prepare law enforcement officers to readily confront complex policing and security threats. Read more

Zimbabwe Police delegation visits RNP


A five-man delegation from Zimbabwe Republic Police visited Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Tuesday as part of their four-day study tour on policing in the country.

The delegation headed by Commissioner Erasmus Makodza, the Officer Commanding Police for East part of Zimbabwe, was received at the RNP Headquarters in Kacyiru by Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo, the Commissioner for Community Policing.

Commissioner Makodza said that the Zimbabwe Republic Police wants to learn from RNP’s experience as one of the best Police institutions on the continent. Read more

Rwanda Premier League: Police wins to go top


A 2-0 win over newcomers Heroes FC on Friday took Police Football Club to the top of Rwanda Premier League table with 11 points.

Police captain Aimable Nsabimana broke the deadlock two minutes before the first period break after he tapped-in Nshuti Savio's corner.

The law enforcers made very few attempts in the first half, with the visitors creating a number of unanswered opportunities.

The introduction of Justin Mico deep in the second-half at the expense of Isae Isonga brought the rhythm into the match with many squandered opportunities though. Read more
