UN decorates Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Haiti

The United Nations decorated twenty seven Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers in Haiti with service medals for their outstanding peacekeeping role in the Caribbean nation.

The officers serving as Individual Police Officers (IPOs) under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) were decorated on February 9 in a ceremony held in Port Au Prince.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of Mission in Haiti, Sandra Honore, who presided over the medal parade, expressed gratitude for the professionalism and discipline exhibited by the decorated officers.

“You served with dignity, dedication and hard work and it is a pride to the UN,” Honore said. READ MORE

Rubavu cyclists form 17 anti-crime clubs

Over 1500 commercial cyclists operating in Rubavu District formed 17 anti-crime clubs as an effective means to put their community policing ideas together to partner with security organs to fight and prevent crimes.

The anti-crime clubs formed during their meeting on February 10 in Kanzenze Sector, will be operating in six sectors.

The meeting was also attended by police officers and local leaders in the district.

Rubavu District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Callixte Kalisa, who also attended the meeting thanked the cyclists for the initiative saying that such a move signals their commitment in ensuring public safety. READ MORE

Malawian lawmakers visit Isange One Stop Centre

A delegation of nine officials from Malawi, who include six members of the national assembly, on February 10 visited Isange One Stop Centre situated at Kacyiru Police Hospital, and commended the centre’s role in addressing challenges of gender based violence and child abuse.

Hon. Cecilia Emily B. Chazama, the head of the delegation, appreciate and expressed the importance of Isange model in African countries as an effective response to GBV challenges, affecting many nations.

The lawmakers from the Malawian Parliamentary Women Caucus (PWC) are in the country since February 7, and Hon. Chazama said their visit is aimed at learning from Rwanda’s women empowerment approaches and to understand how the security organs partners with members of the general public to fight and prevent gender based violence.

“We have been impressed by the partnership between Rwanda National Police and the Ministry of Health to effectively run this centre, we have learnt a lot that we are going to emulate when we go back home,” Hon. Chazama, who is also the vice chairperson of Malawi Parliamentary Women Caucus, said. READ MORE

Rwanda National Police hands over recovered car to UK authorities

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on February 8, handed over a Range Rover Sport V8 vehicle recovered in Rwanda last year, to the United Kingdom authorities.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Tony Kuramba, commissioner for Interpol and Cooperation in RNP, handed over the vehicle and its supporting documents to David Ward, the UK National Crime Agency regional liaison officer.

The posh vehicle stolen in the UK was impounded on February 2, last year at Rusizi border post as it crossed into Rwanda from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ward said that the car was stolen in the UK in September 2014. READ MORE

Huye DPC urges residents to implement anti-malaria strategies

The District Police Commander of Huye, Chief Superintendent (CSP) Francis Muheto, appealed to residents to heed government calls to implement laid strategies meant to prevent and fight malaria.

CSP Muheto made the call while appearing on a live talk-show on Huye community radio on February 11.

The talk show, which was in line with the ongoing Rwanda National Police (RNP) awareness campaign against malaria, which has been incorporated in the force’s human security and other outreach programmes.

Malaria, is one of killer diseases, and that is  insecurity if not checked; the good thing is that the government understands this and it has put in place effective measures to prevent it and now it goes down to the beneficiaries… it is the people themselves to effectively implement these initiatives to kick malaria out of Rwanda,” said CSP Muheto. Varsity students in Gicumbi in crime prevention awareness

Students at the University of Technology and Arts Byumba in Gicumbi District belonging to Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing Organisation have vowed to strengthen their anti-crime campaign as means to raise awareness on crime prevention rather that dealing with the consequences of crime.

Emmanuel Nganeyezu, the team leader of the organization members in the Gicumbi-based University, said during their meeting on February 10 that they made a general decision to put much emphasis on crime prevention focusing on common and high impact crimes like human trafficking, drug abuse and gender based violence.

“The role of this organization is to have an impact in the general security status in our country, but also looking at the welfare of the people, so we have to walk the rhythm, be more innovative in our awareness campaigns to ensure that people understand a language of prevention rather than fighting a crime,” Nganeyezu told fellow crime preventers. Kamonyi: Pupils equipped with road safety tips

As part of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) strategies to promote road safety while preventing accidents, the force reached out to pupils of Gihinga Primary School in Gacurabwenge Sector of Kamonyi District and gave them road safety tips.

Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira, the in-charge traffic in Kamonyi, who gave a lengthy road safety lecture to over 300 pupils of Gihinga on February 12, explained to them the meaning of Zebra Crossing, traffic lights and how safely to cross the road.

“Some of you have dangerous tendencies of playing in the middle of the road, which should stop with immediate effect. Always be vigilant and in case you want to stop a vehicle so your colleagues can cross the road, you should raise a hand towards the direction where a vehicle is coming from but wait until the automobile stops to cross,” he added. Burera and Rubavu motorcyclists in anti-crime awareness

As part of the ongoing anti-crime campaign, Rwanda National Police reached out to commercial motorcyclists operating in different places of Rubavu and Burera districts and urged them to work closely with security organs in a bid to ensure public safety.

Police met with close to 600 commercial motorcyclists on February 11 in two separate meetings.

In Rubavu, the District Police Commander (DPC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Callixte Kalisa met with over 500 commercial motorcyclists operating in Rubavu town and enlightened them about the need to cooperate with security organs.

“The relations between the Police and commercial motorcyclists are very good but we need to maintain it and even take it to another level in the field of jointly preventing crimes in our communities,” said the DPC. READ MORE

Nyagatare anti-drug abuse campaign pays off

The intensified campaign against trafficking, sell and use of narcotic drugs in Nyagatare District led to the seizure of banned gin which include 500 cartons of Chief Waragi and about 650 litres of crude waragi commonly known as kanyanga.

According to Senior Supt. Safari Christian, the District Police Commander, the illicit substances worth over Rwf9.2 million, were seized in intensified operations conducted in the last two months.

The drugs were destroyed recently in presence of hundreds of residents and students, an event normally used to further sensitise the general population on the dangers of consuming such harmful substances, and repercussions involved including imprisonment.

“Most of these contrabands impounded in December and January, were recovered from dealers red-handed after members of the public informed us, and actually provided detailed information on either traffickers, sellers or consumers,” said SSP Safari. READ MORE
