Over 1880 complete ‘Police Basic course’

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye conferred upon the rank of ‘Police Constable’ to 1883 police men and women after completing a vigorous eight-month police basic course at Police Training School (PTS) Gishari.

The thirteenth Basic Police Course includes 222 women.

Speaking at the colorful pass out ceremony held at PTS in Rwamagana District, Minister Busingye challenged the new officers to live up to the expectations of Rwandans and Rwanda National Police in particular, of keeping the security of citizens and their belongings intact.

He asked them to espouse the values of RNP and sustain the image of the institution that they have formerly joined. Read more

Police warns private security companies over unprofessionalism as four are closed

Rwanda National Police (RNP) sternly warned private security service providers against unprofessional conduct and violating standard procedures.

The warning follows the closure of four private security firms, which were operating illegally.

RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege confirmed that the affected companies were “operating without a license.”

The suspended security firms are Delta Limited, Wide Vision Company Limited, Guard Marks and DICEL Security.

“The procedures for starting and operating a private security company are clear and well stated in the ministerial order. Overall, you need to apply and acquire an operational license, which these four companies didn’t have. So they have been ordered to close all their activities with immediate effect,” ACP Badege said. Global Fund board members visit Isange One Stop Center

A delegation of 13 board members of Global Fund visited Isange One Stop Centre situated at Kacyiru District Hospital, to have a firsthand experience on how Rwanda handles and responds to sexual and gender based violence.

The officials are part of the bigger group of Global Fund Board members that is in the country for the 37th board meeting that is also serving as a platform to learn about Rwanda’s innovative approaches towards community health.

At the centre, they were received by the coordinator of Isange One Stop Centres, Supt. Shafiga Murebwayire, who briefed them on the historical background of the establishment of the centres, and guided them to various wings of the centre including the children, counseling and legal wings. How fishing cooperatives in Rubavu boost maritime security

The shoreline of Lake Kivu in Rubavu District used to be a beehive and pathway of both legal and illegal activities.

Whereas fishing is legal in this lake, it was habitual for fishermen to use substandard and unauthorized fishing nets and netting immature fire. They were a danger to the species.

Smuggling and trafficking of narcotic drugs through this lake was also the order of the day.

Today, however, it is a different story. It is a story of safe waters, holidaymakers basking in the sun enjoying the lakeside gentle winds and swimming. Read more

UN intermission retreat opens in Kigali

The intermission retreat for three United Nations missions of Darfur (UNAMID), South Sudan (UNMISS) and Abyei (UNISFA) opened at Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru senior UN officials met to deliberate on various issues pertaining peace and security in the three neighbouring missions.

Participants in the three-day retreat include Police Commissioners, and senior police advisors, Chiefs of Staff, Chiefs of Operations and all essential staff members from the three missions.

While officially opening the retreat, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana commended the sacrifice, dedication and commitment of peacekeepers and their perseverance to bring about peace in the world.

“Peace is the most important single factor in human life. Rwanda has had her own share of turmoil; we had a dooms day of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi,” IGP Gasana said. Read more

A glance at Police operations against theft in Kigali

Combined efforts against theft in the City of Kigali recovered about stolen items over the last eight months, majority electronics, according to Rwanda National Police (RNP) records.

The recovered stolen items in 54 different types include laptops and desktop computers, television sets, smart-phones, home theaters and speakers, and Ipads.

Also recovered are projectors, printers and eight motorcycles.

Majority of the victims, who were victims of theft, received their recovered items, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson. Read more

Rwandan police peacekeepers in Darfur light women centre in IDP camp

Rwandan police peacekeepers serving as Individual Police Officers (IPOs) under the African Union-United Nations hybrid Operations in Darfur (UNAMID) donated solar home systems to light business centre for women in Abushouk internally displaced camp.

The women centre helps women to make ends meet through various income generating activities like sewing, and acts as a training ground where women are given varied skills in tailoring and art-craft.

Rwandan peacekeepers also donated air-fan machines to the women centre as well as six bundles of clothes and mats to the Kindergarten school in the same camp.

The donation is a financial contribution of each of the 54 Rwandan IPOs, who act as Police advisors and mentors in UNAMID. Read more

Police warns against illegal dealing in inflammable products

Rwanda National Police (RNP) warned people against illegal dealings in inflammable products, which can result into a disaster and loss of lives.

“Inflammable liquids such as petrol, diesel and kerosene are strictly sold at petrol stations not in houses or elsewhere; operations are underway to arrest anyone running these dangerous black markets,” said Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, police spokesperson for the City of Kigali.

Meanwhile, during an operation conducted in Muhima against illegal sale of inflammable petroleum products, police seized about 50 litres of diesel, twelve empty jerrycans that were being used in the illegal business, and arrested two people in connection with the act.

“Many fire outbreaks occur because some people are unaware or careless when working with flammables.” he noted. Read more

Biramahire down Kiyovu

A brace by Abed Christophe Biramahire guided Police Football Club to 2-1 win over Sports Club Kiyovu on Day 26 Azam National League played Friday at Mumena stadium.

Biramahire opened the scoreline six minutes inside the match before doubling the lead in the 17th minute to make it 2-0 in the first half.

Kiyovu pulled one back in the second half, but couldn’t break the solid police defense save for few other wasted chances where they also failed to beat goalkeeper Marcel Nzarora
