The Rwanda National Police (RNP) ongoing rural lighting programme continued in various parts of the country.

Nyagatare, Nyamagabe connected

The Minister of Infrastructure, James Musoni presided over the official handover of 103 homes solar systems to beneficiaries in Kirebe Village of Rwimiyaga Sector in Nyagatare District.

Minister Musoni, who was accompanied by the Governor of Eastern Province, Judith Kazayire and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, attributed the achievements including the rollout of solar power systems to the good leadership under President Paul Kagame.

On the same day, the Deputy IGP in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda also inaugurated the solar systems connected to 93 households of Cyabuti Village, Suti Cell on Mugano Sector. Read more

Minister Mukantabana urges Karongi residents on patriotism

The Minister of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs, Seraphine Mukantabana, on Tuesday joined residents of Karongi District along with officers of Rwanda National Police (RNP) where she handed over solar energy systems to 130 households in Kanyege Cell of Mutuntu Sector.

Minister Mukantabana urged residents to be vibrant in crime prevention.

She appealed to them to put up measures geared towards environmental protection as means to prevent environmentally-related disasters.

“One of the drivers of a prosperous country is having citizens who are patriots; if we have to maintain what we have achieved and achieve even more, we must be patriots and be focused to ensuring we move our country to a higher level of sustainable security,” Minister Mukantabana told the residents. More 250 households connected with solar energy in Musanze and Gakenke

A total of 100 homes in Nyundo, Rusasa Sector in Gakenke District, and 151 others of Ruhehe Village, Cyanya Cell in Cyuve Sector, Musanze District were also connected with solar energy.

Both events were presided over by the the Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka.

The Minister called for collective approach against gender based violence.

“Gender based violence is not a Rwandan culture and undermines the Rwandan values. It is demeaning to humanity and hinders general development,” the Minister said. Read more

In Nyanza, Police connected 105 households Rukore Village with solar energy. The official inauguration was presided over by the Southern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gilbert R. Gumira alongside the mayor of Nyanza, Erasme Ntazinda.

Police in partnership with the residents also made bricks for the construction of 30 toilets for the vulnerable families and constructed roads that connect Rukore village to other neighbouring villages. Read more


Chief Ombudsman calls for collective action against corruption

The Chief Ombudsman Aloysia Cyanzayire said that consequences of corruption are far reaching and called for personal and collective commitment in the fight against the vice.

She said that "eliminating corruption is achievable" if mindsets of people involved are changed at the expense of the community.

The Chief Ombudsman was speaking in Kigali where she presided over the launch of the ‘Anti-Corruption Week’ which falls under the ongoing ‘Police Week 2017’ to mark the 17th anniversary of Rwanda National Police where she was the chief guest.

“Strategies established to combat corruption can not entirely succeed if we cannot individually and collectively interpret the immense side effects of the vice” she said.

She said that the young generations must be taught the values of integrity in fighting such malpractices combating graft is not a one agency activity but rather a collective undertaking. Read more


Road Safety campaign: RNP embarks on marking hotspots

Following the launch of the campaign to curb road carnages, Rwanda National Police (RNP) embarked on a countrywide exercise to remark zebra crossings and erect new signposts especially around school zones.

The exercise was officially launched yesterday in Kicukiro District by the vice mayor for the City of Kigali in charge of Economic Development, Parfait Busabizwa.

The exercise was also held concurrently in other 36 sites across the country.

It involved creating new zebra crossings and painting faded ones, marking, fixing and renewal of sign posts around schools on highways and other hotspots. Read more

Ensuring Road Safety: Police conducts massive campaign in schools

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) department of Traffic and Road Safety conducted a massive sensitization in schools as part of the campaign to prevent road carnage and promote road safety.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety Department, since the campaign was launched on May 21, they focused on pedestrians including students, motorcyclists and cyclists.

“We have since sensitized about 100, 000 in one hundred schools countrywide, especially those near highways and hotspots. This is because they are one of the vulnerable pedestrian groups as road users on daily basis, but also due to their age that needs to be guided,” said CIP Kabanda. Read more

RPU seize 80 tons of smuggled second-hand clothes

The Revenue Protection Unit intercepted about 80 tons of second hand clothes that were being smuggled into the country

According to Chief Supt. Sam Bugingo, the Commanding Officer of RPU, a Rwanda National Police (RNP) arm attached to Rwanda Revenue Authority (RNP) to fight fraud and smuggling, the tons of clothes were seized in varied operations in the last three months.

“We have impounded 24 vehicles countrywide in the last three months which were sneaking a combined quantity of about 80 tons of second hand clothes,” Chief Supt. Bugingo said. Read more

Visiting delegation commend RNP’s strategies against graft

A delegation of ten officials from Mali, Burkina Faso and Congo Brazzaville, visited Rwanda National Police (RNP) to learn from the force’s strategies in prevention and fighting corruption.

The delegation was comprised representatives of different civil society organizations linked to Transparency International in their respective countries.

One of the delegates,  Dr Abdoulaye Sall said: “Rwanda has managed to be where it is because of the political will and its committed leadership, that’s why we chose to learn from Rwanda and so far the finding are very impressive." Read more

RNP takes child protection campaign to Rulindo

In a bid to ensure no abuse of children’s rights, Police in Rulindo District met with 350 tea farmers operating at Muvumo and Kavumo sites in Rulindo District and tutored them about effects of child labour.

They were also urged to advance the rights of children.

Nyirahahakizimana Evelyne, the director of labour in Rulindo, told the farmers that, “any child who is below the age of 16 should be in school not working for money.”

“Some parents involve children in field work collecting tea which amount to child labour and punishable by laws,” the labour inspector said. Read more
