Governor Bosenibamwe roots for ownership against crimes in Northern Province
The Governor of the Northern Province, Bosenibamwe Aime called upon residents in the region to own the fight against all sorts of crimes, noting that “collective ownership will cement the ideal of crime prevention.”
The Governor made the call while addressing residents of Musanze and Burera districts in separate meetings held on May 12.
While addressing thousands of residents of Musanze in a meeting held in Kimonyi Sector, Bosenibambwe noted that “security without the involvement and active participation of the people hits a dead end.”
“The community policing initiative empowers you to equally be at the heart of identifying and reporting any criminal or unlawful acts. Wrongdoers live with you… they live in your communities and are known by you,” Governor Bosenibamwe said. Read more
UNMISS Chief of Operations visit Rwanda FPU camp
The Chief of Operations under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Butera, on May 12 visited the Rwanda Formed Police (FPU) base camp in Malakal and urged them to maintain the spirit and be result-oriented.
He thanked them for maintaining good partnership with the people, especially those who are internally displaced, police advisors and other community watch groups, sharing information in order to maintain security and prevent the occurrence of crimes in IDP camps.
“Your country tasked you to fulfill your duties diligently; you must be guided by the will, training and professionalism, all which ultimately produce quality results,” the UNMISS Chief of Operations said. Read More
Fresh Police call to protect environment, relocate to safe zones
Rwanda National Police (RNP) reminded the general public to desist from environmental degradation as means to prevent disastrous effects.
Police also called on people still residing in high risk areas to relocate to safer places as allocated by local authorities.
The director of the RNP’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU), Supt. Modeste Mbabazi, noted that there are still people, who encroach on reserved habitat like forests and even build houses in high risk zones.
“There are still many activities in different parts of the country that affect the environment. We still experience tendencies of illegal mining, cutting down trees including in gazetted areas or forestry reserves and national parks; building houses in high risk zones or violating housing standards, which are punishable by the law, on one hand, but can as well result into loss of lives on another hand,” Supt. Police rallies Nyagatare residents against GBV, human trafficking
In a bid to further respond to specific security issues in identified areas, a team of police officers from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Criminal Investigations Department (CID) reached out to the residents of Nyagatare Sector in Nyagatare District and sensitized them to drive the awareness against crimes.
The team that included Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hubert Rutaro and Inspector of Police (IP) Viviane Umulisa had accompanied the RNP Mobile Police Station van on May 10, which was stationed in Tubagwe Cell to facilitate residents to file any complaint they may have.
The awareness addressed three issues; gender based violence, child abuse and human trafficking.
While speaking to the residents, CIP Rutaro spoke at length about human trafficking and urged residents to join efforts in ensuring that the emerging threat is fought.
“We need to widen our understanding of how human trafficking is conducted and the consequences involved as means to prevent anyone from falling prey,” CIP Rutaro said. Read More
Genocide fugitive arrested in Kigali
Police in Kigali arrested a 48-year old man masquerading as a Tanzanian, wanted for his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Hussein Minani, who had acquired a Tanzanian citizenship under the alias name; Hussein Abdul Kitumba Mujandi, was arrested on May 6 in Remera, Gasabo District.
Minani WAS wanted for genocide, extermination as a crime against humanity, murder and rape during the genocide. He allegedly committed the offences in the former Butare prefecture in the commune of Ngoma, now Huye District. Read More
Four school anti-crime clubs created in Kicukiro
Four secondary schools in Kicukiro established anti-crime clubs as part of their efforts to strengthen their internal discussions and raise awareness against crimes and abuse of drugs in particular.
The clubs were formed separately in Nyanza, Gatenga I, Samuduha Integrated College (SICO) and EFOTEC in Kanombe.
At SICO, Tuyisenge Nkusi, who was elected to head the club said: “Today marks a formal beginning for our active role in community policing and fighting abuse of illicit drugs either within our school or where we live.”
“As the youth, we have to use all the energy to fight anything unlawful that can destabilize the security we enjoy today, and narcotic drugs and other illicit substances remains among them, but the worst part is that we are the main victims and we should take the lead to fight them,” Tuyisenge added. The first round of the national handball championship came to a close over the weekend with the reigning champions, Police continuing to dominate the local arena.

Former addicts lead campaign against narcotics in Kamonyi
In 2013, Micheal Nshuti, a resident of Runda Sector in Kamonyi District left his parents’ house in pursuit for a new life.
At 18 years and acting under peer pressure, Nshuti defied his parents’ advice and decided to start a new individual life.
It didn’t take him long to end up on the streets, spending nights in the gutters smoking cannabis and drinking all sorts of illicit brew.
“For three years, I was living in that miserable life. I could end up in fights because I was under influence of drugs and on several occasions I could go days without a meal,” says Nshuti who is now reformed. Read More
CPCs told to focus on crime prevention
Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) from Ngoma, Nyabihu, Huye and Kicukiro districts were urged to be more vibrant in crime prevention by working closely with the people to jointly detect and share information with police on anything that can lead to insecurity.
The call was made during their separate meetings with police held on May 12.
In Ngoma, the District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) Javier Mutaganda reminded over 480 members of CPCs that they are influential in promoting law and order in communities by sensitizing their neighborhoods about the need to fight crime.
“You cannot work in isolation and expect remarkable results, and that’s why as police, we work with everyone but also count on you to work with the people to feel that gap where police can’t be at all times,” SSP Mutaganda said. Read More
Police moves step up on the national league table
Police Football Club moved one slot up to the fifth position after beating relegation threatened Muhanga 2-0 on Wednesday on Day 23 of the Azam National League.
Striker Danny Usengimana grabbed the brace, scoring in each half to increase his tally to 11 goals, two goals behind Ismailia Diarra of Rayon Sports with 13 goals, Andre Lomami of SC Kiyovu and Davis Kasirye of Rayon Sports, who are both tied on 12 goals.
